View Full Version : 16th Annual New Mexico State Championship, June 14-15
Let's get this ball rolling. Assuming its not already full (and I'm only half joking) this is one you've got to play to believe. The course at Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort is at once one of the most challenging, yet rewarding courses you're likely to play.
The best part is, if by some wicked twist of fate, you're having a bad round, just stop and look around you. It'll put your bad round in perspective and make you glad to be alive and to be a disc golfer.
This is where my family takes our annual summer vacation. While I'm playing during the day, Michelle and the kids are off exploring Taos and the surrounding countryside. There's plenty for the family to do, not to mention that the Carson National Forest is among the most beautiful mountain areas I've ever seen.
This thing fills about a month in advance usually, so get in while you can. This year they've got it listed on Titledisc. I know a lot of Tejas players that are going and even one transplanted Texan from Down Under. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
So, is you is, or is you ain't? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

URGH!!! Now why did I plan the Wide Open this weekend as well? I love this course. Yet again I am going to miss the event. I really need to have my head analyzed. If you are not planning on coming to KC, go here, this place is one of my favorite courses. I got sick when I realized that this event was the same weekend we planned the Am Wide Open.
I am sure that it will be a great time there as well. Timing was off yet again.

I'll wager a case of Fat Tire right now that a colorado golfer wins this baby! Step up to the plate Southwest!
Well Mike, since you're not current and I can't check your PR, you have me at a slight disadvantage. However, since I know a couple of the Texas MPO reps that'll be there, and since all I have to agree to is someone other than a Colorado player winning, I'll take your bet.
I'm not allowed contractually to drink anything other than Miller Lite (the best light beer in the world and the one that started the whole "light" beer industry) or ZiegenBock (the best brown beer, brewed and available only Texas), but if you want to buy me a case of Fat Tire when you lose, I'm sure I can trade it to someone. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

I dont know, he may have something.. I was planning on chartering a bus anf gathering a bunch of friends to head for the Kiss the Sky Tournament in Aspen. Talk about a difficult looking course, but too beautiful too miss. Im gonna be there, so any Houstonians interested in taking there vacation in July for about a week let me know, I plan to hit Aspen, Winter Park, Beaver Run, and several more courses while Im there. Then well see whos the best on your own turf, hee hee.. 8) I am working on my travel plans allready and its gonna be a Shindiggin good time.

One big road trip. San Marcos to Sipapu to Lubbock to Dallas back to San Marcos. 3 tournaments in 3 weeks.
You better be in shape, mate, that "little bunny hill" (bite me, Randy) is gonna work you.
BTW, I'm taking OMB this year, just thought y'all should know. (Sorry Bill, second will have to be good enough this year, too. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif )

I'm trying to get that from Bill Leslie, Chile. As soon as I get it, I'll post it, but I haven't heard back from him. I may try to give them a call today.
I working on some interesting stuff today, so I'll be pretty busy, but as soon as I know, you'll know. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Heard some of you want to come play Sipapu this next week. Bring your skis and snowshoes! Actually we have about 15 baskets in but there is still snow on the ground. I am leaving Friday for three weeks so you guys can talk about me while I am gone. Will think about you while I am playing courses in Nashville, Atlanta and other spots in the Smokey Mountains! Not bad for a computer idiot! I am to busy playing disc golf to worry about a little ole computer!
Bill
Thanks,ttace see ya there.
Thanks Bill!
You guys be nice to Bill and he may come and participate more often. I sent him the link to the Sipapu discussion because I was pretty sure he hadn't seen it.
Don't get too upset about the computer remark there Bill. That's just the way we talk to each other 'round here. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
And while we're busy smacking you around, Why aren't you in Adv. Masters this year? I went into the final round last year tied with you for second and blew up. I wanna rematch! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Hey Garnett, I didn't see your name on that list. Wassup? No Willy C or Kiko either.
Lots of other friends that I see there every year though, are in. Some of my favorite DG people that I only get to see once a year (Markham, Kirk, Denny, Robert and many others) along with 14 Lone Star golfers are gonna make this a great time as always.
Did I mention that I'm gonna win OMB this year? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
I never get upset. I just get even! Everyone of you are starting on hole 16 or 17! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Mark, I couldn't stand the heat. I had to move to another division. You'll just have to get older! The bad part was that you let an old fart like me beat you! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Should we really break Chris in on the course and let him have the distinct privilege of starting on 17?
No Bill, make him start on #14! Start him out with a big ole number. Ha ha ha! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Or #5. That way when he's real tired at the end of the round his last walk of the round will be up to #4. Not as long as those other walks you mentioned, but a lot steeper. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
God, I gotta quit smoking soon and start playing rounds with a bag instead of my cart to get ready.
I just went through the previous responses. Those who called this a bunny hill have obviously not played it! Kiss the Sky in Aspen is great but we don't give you a lift to the top of the mountain. You have to play your way to the top! Talk about wimps!
By the way for all you procrastinators out there, there is a waiting list. Just contact me at ttace@kitcarson.net or call (505) 587-2087 and leave your name, contact no/email, and division.
We actually filled this tournament two months and one week early! It was completely amazing!
See you there! Anyone coming our way at any time, just give Sue and I notice and we will be happy to come join you. Also you can come and play our new course which will open mid-late May.

I'll volunteer to start on hole #20 all weekend! Actually, whoever starts on hole #5 gets to make that hike a little easier by walking up the dirt road. Starting on hole #6 means that you get to make the steep hike to #5 the last agonizing steps of your round (good thing there are some seats up there to make it more comfortable to breathe in that thin mountain air). P.S.- Bill, I'll get those bridges made by the time you and Sue get back from your trip. I can't wait to see the new "Two Grey Hares" course. Have fun on your well earned vacation, take lots of pics, and get lots of birdies.
Ah, Sipa Burgers with a few cold adult beverages kicked back in the lounge upstairs with everyone crowded into the room watching the finals of the US Open on Sunday. That's the way to relax after a weekend of great mountain golf.
So many great things add up to make this my favorite several day long stretch of the year.
Now if I could just keep Michelle and the kids from spending a fortune in Taos every time we go, it'd be perfect. /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

"Hey Garnett, I didn't see your name on that list. Wassup?"
- Procrastination is one of my forte's.
- I don't like to plan 3 months in advance, I'm a little more spontaneous then that.
- I figured/hoped that the owners would wise up and split it into two seperate weekends since this has to be a money maker for the restaurant/bar/store/hotel/etc.
I hear 'ya. I was going to procrastinate on this one too, but I never got around to it. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
I didn't see DriveThruLiquor's name on there either. Guess he already owes me a case of beer. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

El Chile, They sell liquor at the store at Sipapu. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Rason we didn't split the weekends is that after taking a poll of disc golfers for several months, the majority (well over 90 percent) did not want to split it. A majority of our gofers travel together (pro and am). We also get several family groups coming as a result that we would not get otherwise. However, next year if our new course proves out, we will up the limit to 200 players. Also for those of you who have not been TD's, two weekends is a lot of extra work and planning.
We are going with what the majority voted for!/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Hey Bill, don't split the weekends. Then us lowly Ams wouldn't ever get to spend quality time with Pros like JG. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Going to sleep now to dream of 600' putter aces. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Keith, nothing personal, but if I had a sponsor exemption, I think it would go to a TX OMB for USDGC DFL. /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif
Keith, keep dreaming of 600' putter aces. For you maybe 60' putter aces!:o
Sue and I would like to thank all you golfers out there that make Sipapu such a great event. It is one of the reasons that we have been so involved in disc golf.
Mark, I for one agree with you about keeping it all in one weekend. I truly believe that is why we get so many entries. The interaction here is amazing, especially because we are one of the few tournaments where the vast majority stay at the site.
Just one more comment. Sipapu does not run the tournaments. They are just the venue. The tournament the last few years is being run by the Sipa Disc Golf Club which has a very limited membership. We really enjoy doing the two tournaments a year at the lodge. The course is available for other clubs to set up tournaments. :0
We are getting quite a waiting list for this tournament.
Two courses next year, 200 discgolfers next year, COOL! I'll have to make this a family trip next year.
Oops! Meant to diss Mark and not Keith./msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
However, was I right? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Thanks El Chile. That is just the kind of response we have been receiving abd hope to receive in the future. Sue and I are going to have the new course open in mid-May. We already have the anchors in and have the baskets sitting in the garage for our return from vacation.
At least our course will not be as physically challenging but it will be fun to play. It will be a pay to play course ($3 for all day).
Looking forward to seeing all you guys in the near future.
Actually, I was kind of dissing myself regarding JG smacking me about throwing Rocs on #18 instead of putters.
He's such a Pro. Maybe someday, I'll be able to putt using an A.P. AP. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
No matter what I throw on 18 I am still in trouble! If I threw a putter, I would probably wipe out everyone on the Advanced Tee!/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
> Actually, I was kind of dissing myself regarding
> JG smacking me about throwing Rocs on #18 instead
> of putters.
Actually, I threw Rocs last year. Too much wind for the putter. Got it to within 40' two out of three rounds, and clanked the putts.
Nothing prettier than a Roc flying straight and true 600' down a mountain, huh? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Hmmm.....boy that might just have to be a plan, Chiefs Play Pittsburgh here though.....might be hard to miss that game since they are my two favorite teams.....but ahh to dream. Will I feel like I am there by wearing the t-shirt from there?
I have dreams about it still as well, does that count? Doubles.......Doubles.....hmmmm......might have to come up with a game plan for it. Is there en ough space to bring the whole family and possibly another family? How many rooms are available at the inn? I should also ask, how many teams will be in, since you already are full for this event, when does registration open for the other event?
URGH!! I want to play!
Entry forms are available at www.sipapunm.com. (http://www.sipapunm.com.) To check on lodging availability call (800) 587-2240. The resort can accommodate up to 250 people. Last check showed plenty of rooms available. We are just beginning the registration process and will have credit card registration after we get back in late May. We can take up to 60 teams. We only lacked two teams of filling last year.
Turn your URGH! into AHH!
Well guys, we are off for three weeks to Nashville and the Smokey Mountains. Have fun and keep the discs flying!
Have fun Bill and Sue. We'll see you guys soon. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

So far no fire restrictions. I was up there this past weekend (Sat. thru Mon.) and it rained most of the day Sunday. The river is RAGING! If you go in the drink on #2, #4, or #19, you might not find it until winter time (when you get to use your free lift ticket from the players package-so get your SNOWBOARDS waxed up and ready to go), and then it might be down river at Bill & Sue's place, or it might just make it's way all the way down to the Rio Grande, and then you might be able to get it out on a float trip in Big Bend Nat. Park (wishful thinking, I'd like to float the Bend sometime). By the way, I got to witness a 2 on hole 14 Sunday afternoon after the rain, during a round of doubles (Kyle Norrid hit a long approach after a 245' drive by Morgan ?-not sure of his last name but he's from Albuquerque). Par on that hole is great!

Oh yeah, if you smoke, please use the trash cans for your butts. I saw a few left-overs laying around and if the Forest Service people see them, were all in trouble.
Oh great, and just when I'm trying to quit. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif In case anyone has failed to notice the pronounced reduction in Martyr Post Smilies (not bloody likely), I've been a little testy the last couple of days due to my 4th attempt in five years to avoid nicotine. The first one lasted 3 years, the others have been much less impressive. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
A 2 on 14? Dazamn! That's awesome, doubles or not! The 14th NMSC artwork/t-shirts used #14 as its theme. Don't remember without looking at it, but the stats on that hole were listed and I don't remember many 2's (single digits). In fact, there were Some 3's, a big 'o bunch of 4's, plenty of 5's, some 6's and 7's, and even an 8 or two.
Wicked, but doable badass hole. Alot of the holes out there (most, in fact), are different than what you'll find on most other courses, so its hard to say they have just one signature hole. But, if there was, #14 would be a top vote getter.
#18 is just beautiful. I can't tell you how bad I wanna park a Roc on a 600' hole. Hopefully I'll make JG proud this year. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
#5 is one of my faves too. Really would be a good hole to spot on. You'd get to see everything from bonus 2's and good 3's, to some much higher scores that included some bad luck, bad shots, bad bounces and some most non-triumphant rollaways.
#2 is one of the courses shorter holes, but where else do you get to throw through a window of pines and aspens, downhill toward a swiftly running, ice cold mountain creek?
#4 is a cold blooded killer. Its a tough and unforgivingly tight hole, back over the creek, through a ton of trees and ends in a basket mounted on a very steep grade. Then, as you're walking away and heading toward #5, you can hear it laughing at you as you struggle to breathe and climb to the next tee, probably the most brutal stretch of walking on the course. This hole haunts me.
#...sorry, I digress...nice two!
Can you tell I'm ready? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Yeah Mark that walk from #4 to #5 is a killer, at least for this flatlander. It gets kind of hard to throw when you can hardly catch your breath, must be the breathtaking views all over the course. Can't wait to get there.
Whats the temp.like?and can we take a BBQ pit a small one of course?or is one provided?I hear that Chris Himing is punking out.
grambo
May 29 2003, 01:11 PM
Take your own BBQ pit, as long as no fire restrictions, then was OK before
They have fire pits, but no good grate on top, eh?
Temperature can be cold at night (28 degrees two years ago), probably around 40
Highs were hot last year, but this year looks cooler
Weather.com says june 7 will be 74/42 at Vadito, NM, the closest post office
With the rain Rock says they've had, probably mosquitos in the woods
Cool, Grambo, see ya there.

I am sacrificing going to New Mexico so I can concentrate on putting on a quality event in Lubbock the following weekend then the week after a PDGA B-tier in Dallas. 3 1/2 weeks on the road is not what I can afford right now. My 2 events would suffer and I will not allow that to happen.
Think of the positive, you do not have to share a house with me snoring now/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

ok, one week to go, and no smack talk from anyone!
why are you NM golfers so QUIET?
is it the lack of oxygen up there?
I thought when Bill showed up, there'd be non-stop chatter on this thread...

marcace, when are you going to make an appearance at Sipapu? It's no farther than Moody's, eh?
7838, you're right, only 4 days!
no AM lubbock for me, staying in Clovis, lunch in Las Vegas (NM), afternoon round at Sipapu!
i'll be in the bag by the time you guys get there
although i might hold off for a money round, cause I can't go up that hill after more than a couple beers
we're in 9D

After a trek up and down that hill, cold beer hits the spot. Stop by the DiscCrazy room (not sure which room we're in, but we will be there early Friday afternoon-look for my big white four door pickup) and help us drain a keg of Shiner Bock while you're checking out the latest wares from DiscCrazy (cheap plug for the sponsor). Maybe we can set up some of our portable baskets and get into a little putter wagering (Shay Carlilse is still talking about taking a few bucks from everyone last year with his 100ft. putter ace).
O.K. who else is is wussin out, Chris Himing, Rene?
ttace, how's the weather like for the week?
TTace whats the weather like for the week?
Rene's wussing? Bummer. I just had Chelle check the weather and they're calling for scattered T-storms 30% chance Friday-Tuesday. I'm kinda bummed about it, but I'd rather be rained on in Sipapu than anywhere else. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Right now its 66 degrees. The forecast for the tourney is calling for low temps in the high 30's to low 40's and high temps in the mid 70's.
Ha, Ha, Ha! I beat Seewhere to it! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Sorry guys but I ain't skeered and I sure ain't wussin out. I'll be there tomorrow afternoon ready to kick some arse and have a nice lil vacation away from work. See y'all there.

Just so you guys know where chatterbox TT Ace was prior to the tournament, somebody had to set it up for you! Also we were trying to and succeeded in getting our new course (Two Gray Hares Disc Golf Course) in. Come on and try it out! You will have to play it next year! Way to go,Bill! Thanks for all of your work to both Sue and you. Also congrats to Jessie O. for doing a great job. I had a great weekend and even got to split a room with New Mexico's newest Master's Champion, Kyle Norrid from Amarillo, TX.-way to go "Lefty". Also to the other players from Amarillo who played well enough to place in the money, way to represent! Can't wait for Doubles in September.
Well...Mark put the ratings system to the test on that one! lmao

Congratulations Mark,
Now are you coming back where you belong ? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Just walked in from a 14 hour freakin' drive. I'll save the speech for the next daylight I'm awake for Dave, but suffice it to say I'm extremely pleased with the ratings experiment. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Seriously, I played way over my head. Middle tees, yes, but you still gotta put the biscuit in the basket and keep your discs from rolling down the mountain.
Winning for the first time ever was nice, but here's what I'm more proud of than anything:
7 bogeys all weekend and nothing higher
12 birdies (if my math's right)
Under par for the first time ever in a tournament round (no matter which division I was playing) and was under par each of the three rounds
Of course, Wednesday I shot something like 19 over in L-town so I'm not sure which golfer will show up come tourney time, but that was definitely the best I've ever played, regardless of the tees or the division.
Gotta go sleep now. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Congrats Martyr! Way to put 3 solids rounds in a row together! (I occasionally have a good round or two, but putting them all together at one time is rare for me! /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif )
We're expecting a full trip report soon!
First things first, Thanks Russel. I've been waiting nearly 4 years to do something good enough to be called a bagger. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
To answer your question, The Rec and the Intermediate divisions did play one round from the same tees. After the first round the TD moved them to the Pro tees, as you can probably see by the jump in scores from 1st to 2nd. As for me bagging the Int.'s, who knows. I was leading Rec by 5 and Int. by 3 after round one, but there's no telling what would've happened if I'd been in that division. I'll find out soon enough though. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
As for the tournament, those of you who haven't gone are missing out on one of the greatest disc golf experiences out there. Period! The course is awesome, demanding, physical and breath taking. I've said this before, but no matter what kind of round I'm having there, I just stop and look around and there's no place else I'd rather be. The Carson National Forest is truly a wonderful place and the Sangre De Cristo Mtns. are suhweeet.
Thanks to Jesse and his staff for putting on a great show as always. This is my third year there and its always a great time.
The reason I played so well is that I minimized my mental mistakes. That's it. There's the secret to disc golf. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif Of course, my friends have been telling me this for a long time, I'd just never figured it out until Saturday. I sure hope I don't forget it.

Thanks for your support there, Chuck. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
I don't know if one good tourney will bump my rating up to the next level or not. Especially when they get around to including that ridiculous finish in Waco.
Which reminds me, who are you calling old Randy, you aging hipster you?
One last thing about NMDGC, even though there are only four guys listed in the results, there were five in our division. The guy that had a pretty good hold on 2nd place just didn't show up on Sunday. Not sure why he's not listed. And, out of the five, three of them could throw further than me. I just threw in the right places for a change. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Mark,
Congratulations /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif Glad to see you having fun again. Should be great leader card experience for you and good mental control as well. All of your competitors being able to throw farther than you will hopefully teach you something. Minimizing the mistakes is what this game is all about. Coming off of a mistake and getting back on track and stopping the bleeding is what it is all about. Way to represent./msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Congrats, Mark, short tees or not, you still had to keep it between the trees and putt on those hilly greens.
Congrats to John Rock for what I think was the only bogey-free round of the tournament.
His par putt on 18 from about 50 feet, facing downhill oblivion, was the only possible glitch that I saw. But of course he made it.
I claim the longest drive on 18. It was exactly 100 paces down the hill past the basket. That makes it about 885 feet. Woohoo. Still a bogey, though /msgboard/images/clipart/sad.gif
Gram,Mark, glad to see that you all made safe and sound,it sure is HOT here in Austin/msgboard/images/clipart/sad.gif I'm going back next year/msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif Mark did you leave ALL the sand in N.M.? 4th. place not bad for my first time,All Round Rockers should go to this event. You will never forget this wonderful place/msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif Joe and Rene thanks for being great traveling buddies./msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif its 220 you what that means its 420 somewhere/msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif
Chile, enough about the MA3 winner, let's hear more about that battle for 2nd in Pro Masters! Sounds like it must've been a helluva last hole.
P.S. Don't worry about the sand. This little ratings experiment is designed to get me back to where I belong and maybe be able to hang with you old guys that play for money someday.
Me, a sandbagger. Now THAT is funny. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Congrats Mark, ya the three of us were tied on the last hole and I was going for second no tie and I hit a tree limb and was kicked behind some trees and HAD to settle for a boggie/msgboard/images/clipart/sad.gif but considering everything I did play well/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif I should play better next year/msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif it was ahellofa course.

Thanks Graham, that has to be my best round ever there (not score wise but bogey-free). My own little slice of history. In six years of NM States held at Sipapu, that is the first bogey-free round turned in, by anyone, even the top players who have been there. I was nervous about that putt on 18, but I told myself "Just hit the red tape and there is no drop-off behind the basket". I got a little conservative on the last few holes because that bogey-free thing was stuck in my mind, but I wish I would have attacked the birdie putts more aggressively and maybe I could have moved up to 7th or 8th place. Actually, what's more dissappointing than where I finished, was that out of all the people staying at Sipapu that weekend, we could not finish that keg of Shiner! We're going to try again at the Top Of Texas Open (August 23-24) and everyone is invited to help us try to get it right this time.
grambo
Jun 17 2003, 08:54 PM
well darn, Rock, you shoulda brought that keg over to the awards ceremony
we floated the one there, whatever it was, some darker stuff, good
and forget about shoulda-woulda on the birdies, you can't be running at 'em if you're not ready to bogey
besides, it wasn't your missed birdies in the BF round that kept you from moving farther up /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

It was hard to breathe up there, but down here it's like being underwater. In a hot tub.

/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Peter Sandoval shot bogey free during the last round. He also had to make a great putt on #18 after his birdie putt flew down the mountain.
It sure looks like you guys had such a terrible time at our tournament!/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Mark, the reason that Zack dropped out was that his father who is a doctor had to return to Farmington to handle some kind of medical emergency. Also he did not show up in the standings as I do not post those who DNF.
Congrats Rock on your bogey free round. Must have been because you didn't finish the keg of Shiner!/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

I guess you're right, a SIX on hole #5 in the third round didn't help my effort to move up! Even though I drove to the top of the hill, the dang trees kept sending me back to the bottom. I guess you could say I got Sipapu-ed! Plus spending time in the trees on #12 and #13 is not the way to a podium spot. I've got 360 more days to work out the details for a better finish next year. Let's see, it goes something like - drive and putt, drive and putt, drive and putt...
