View Full Version : Where is Ganja University?
It's in the latest Disc Golf World News.
Have you gotten a new mag yet? Or are you talking about the last issue (Kiss the Sky Cover) ?

It is in Azerbaijan. It is the easternmost country of Transcaucasia (the southern portion of the region of Caucasia), which occupies the southern part of the isthmus between the Black and Caspian seas. The country is bordered on the north by Russia, on the east by the Caspian Sea, on the south by Iran, on the west by Armenia, and on the northwest by Georgia.
Probably more that you wanted to know.

I just got my DGWN and couldn't be more disappointed. Why on earth would they include a picture of a guy wearing a t-shirt that says "Ganja University"? Does DGWN promote marijuana use in other ways? If this is the official publication of the PDGA, they should take measures to ensure this kind of wreckless irresponsibility does not ever happen again. The PDGA should approve the final version before it goes out. Now I'll have to hide this issue from my wife and kids because this is not the image of disc golf I want them to associate with. Also who knows how much sponsorship will be lost from this blunder. Thanks DGWN, thanks for nothing!
So that a timid little anonymous poster could get all worked up about it.

here we go again
As a Ganga U alum, I am offended by discgolfer's suggestion that our logo should not be in DGWN.
Hippie lettuce (aka: reefer, herb, happy cabbage, etc.) is not so bad. And hemp can be used for many practical purposes if one is not predisposed to taking magic carpet rides. Dope smokers are equally distributed throughout populations and anyone who thinks frisbees attract reefer heads is just prejudiced to think potheads have greater artistic/esthetic sensibilities (obviously frisbees are more evolved than balls). Anyway, I'm getting the munchies, and I forgot where I was going with this...

hey brian...what about all the non-timid, BIG non-anonymous posters that would say the same thing if they weren't just wasting their time because the PDGA bod doesn't give a schit about drug use(well only sometimes when the tournament is going on but after 2 minutes and until you turn the card in or until the first full moon of the 3rd quarter when jupiter is aligned with mars, etc. etc.)
that sounds as good as the "POLICY" that is a "goal" for most PDGA events or many other things in the disc golf world that matter to alot of people but NOT the pdga.....what about them brian???
this is totally MY OPINION ONLY(and i'll probably get another nice email)but i KNEW that someone would bring that picture up and even bet my wife a million bucks that within a week someone would post something about it...there is no way that there couldn't have been another picture somewhere of this guy wearing another shirt...but then i could be wrong..it might be the ONLY shirt he owned /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

I'm just tryin' to figure out what this thread has to do with course design....

So, are you saying that because the PDGA is trying to "clean-up" our image we should rewrite our history?
Let's not forget where our roots lie. Hippies, love children and free thinkers are how this sport evolved. Maybe it is embarassing now, but that is the way it was.
BTW, I was very impressed with the players on the National Tour this year. Those guys and girls indeed brought our image up a notch. They all looked very clean cut, and showed great manners, on and off the course.
The past is the past, you can't change it, nor should you try to whitewash it.

Disc Golfer, I guess you need to blindfold the kids and never let them see anyting that might offend someone. Come on, it is just a freakin shirt. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

This is not a big deal. Why not get outraged over a competitive system that fosters sandbagging and mass player exodus instead?
Clean cut? Let's hope disc golf doesn't go for the pompous, pretentious flavor ball golf had in its past.
The way to attract young kids and teens forming their future recreational interests is to have an image of the sport being reasonably cool and non-exclusive. Collared shirt rules are classist non-sense. Being showered and wearing clothes that are not offensive makes sense.

Because we're talkin' course design, not competitive systems, Nick!
I enjoyed the article thoroughly and got a good chuckle out of the GU shirt. The pictures of Elaine, Sammy, Ahart and Zimmerman are classic. This issue was a happy reminder that THE MOST FUN WINS! DD

A southern man don't need him around anyhow
Beer abuse on page 54, now that is just rediculous/msgboard/images/clipart/sad.gif, and there is no way the girl on the left is 21!
Call the PDGA offices. This is an outrage/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
I expected to see the Ganga U teeshirt with a big marijuana leaf on the cover of DGWN given all the rigtheous outrage here. Why would anyone hide this issue from their wife and kids -- how does one's wife or kid even know what "Ganga" means? Doesn't it take a Jamaican or a pothead to make the connection? The person who approved the picture may not have even known what Ganga means.
And would there be such outrage if the guy was wearing a Bud Light t-shirt? Alcohol represents a greater danger to life and limb than pot, though avoiding both and getting high on disc golf is preferable. Stand down from red alert.
I thought the picture was relevant to the article!! Man look at those molds!!! We have come a long way!! Hey to have a future, you got to have a Past! It's all about the ROOTS baby! Bravo to the timeline article!

it says where ganga u is on the logo of the shirt!
in the picture on page 54 i can assure everyone that the only beer abuse that was going on was the not drinking but dumping it part! both myself and the other chick on the left are over 21!
Well I hope he don't come to Austin. Looking at the article and the picture of Austins "nightlife" it seems clear that drugs are everywhere, right smack in the middle of it all/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
when will it all end....
Hell hath no fury... I was just paying/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Ahh Austin/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif It's like leaving Texas, or is it stuck in the Twilight Zone?

"Sorry kid, you can't read that magazine. It's got a reference to DRUGS in it. Now take your Prozac and go to bed so Daddy can go to the store and get more beer." Oh, and to quote Mr. Kight from another thread, "Blah, blah, blah."

the GU pic made me smile, but the Austin Night Life pic had me rolling on the floor... thats a 1000 words worth of picture if there ever was one!
we keep shooting ourselves in the foot........
Ya know, I sat down with a couple of guys on tour and we hashed out who used and who didn't,(no pun intended) I was suprised at the figures! Let's just say I belong to a very very very small minority......
But I'm the bad guy....I guess there has to be one......
I see Tom Kennedy fairly often and have never seen him wear this particular shirt. I suppose it's possible it wore out sometime over the last 30 years along with this sport's sense of humor.

Schweb,
on of the issues of DGWN (the one w/ the flash back article) had a picture of a guy w/ a ganja university shirt on the cover, so it was started while you were on tour and werent on the message board every 5 seconds like you are now

Booze kills more people annually than ALL other drugs combined!
Oh, well, time for a tequila. :D
thats cause its legal...imagine if crank was legal!!??
Blarg
Feb 02 2004, 03:35 AM
If crank were legal (imho) there would be far fewer crank related deaths than there are at present.
Crank should most definatly not be legal. To get back on subject I think Ganja University is in Jamaica.

Tom Kennedy, who wore the "Ganja University" shirt, was not on the cover. Even Rick knows better than that! Scott Zimmerman was on the cover.
And I agree with those that thread was started by someone with too much time.

Disc Nerd:
It's in Azerbaijan and was named after Nizami Ganjavi.
I have visited a few satellite locations, here in TEXAS.
:D:D:D:D:D
i'm sure there are many ganja university alumni here on this very board. :D
I hate to disagree with you blarg but I just realized that it says Jamaica on the shirt that he's wearing in the picture.
I also would like to bring up something even worse (probably going to **** somebody off) that is in this issue. If you take a look at the picture that they subtitled Austin's night life there is a big neon sign that says DRUGS.
Sounds pretty **** accurate, form my visits to A-town.
Ganja U is in Humboldt isn't it? And seriously, whoever said that this sport evolved from hippie pot-heads and is still played by them is absolutely correct. Why else would they have made those smaller minis that fit inside larger minis making a tight, waterproof, stash spot that's legal for tournament play? In the 3 years I've been playing disc golf I can think of maybe 2-3 individual players I've had rounds with that didn't smoke, including tournaments! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
