View Full Version : What is a course pro?

Nov 02 1999, 12:23 PM
Let me try this thing again only under its correct own title.
What does the course pro do?, his or her responsibilities etc.

Nov 02 1999, 01:47 PM
Buy beer for all the golfers. :-)

Run leagues and tournaments
Maintains baskets, tee signs, etc.
Works with the parks department (or whomever owns the land) for any problems that inevitably come up such as discs going into neighbor's yards, fights with other park users, complaints about drug/alchohol use by golfers, etc.
Often (but not always) sells discs
Moves baskets (if applicable)

Howdy All:

Based on my experiences from this year, a course pro is someone who:

1. Spends way too much time at the course, either playing it or cleaning it or just wandering around thinking about ways to improve it.

2. Is constantly begging people to pitch in and help with cleanups and trying to pass on his vision of the course to a bunch of folks who just want to be left alone so they can play.

3. Is always open to suggestions about how to improve the course, knowing fully well that the folks that are always telling you what needs to be done and complaining the loudest about what has or has not been done are the least likely to lift a finger unless it has a disk is in it.

4. Is often asked whether they have a real job or whether they live at the course.

5. Is always talking about the course, much to the dismay of anyone in his group not similarly afflicted. The course pro is hopelessly in love with the course, and is willing to spend inordinate amounts of time digging holes and moving piles of stuff around and picking up branches and limbs and such, however (much to the wife's dismay), he never has time to pick up after himself at home or work in the garden.

6. Has either a pick-up or a truck or a hopelessly filthy car that is crammed full of shovels, pole diggers, disks, work boots, work gloves, spray paint, partially filled gallon jugs of water and remnants of bags of "quickcrete"

7. Knows what day or time it is by who he sees out at the course.

8. Is always trying to cook up ways of throwing better tournaments and getting more people out to the course.

9. Is more than happy to spend all day working out at the course for free; meanwhile they are on the verge of getting fired from their "real" job, the one that actually pays the bills.

10. Spends a lot of time dreaming about hitting the lottery so they can quit their job and build the best course in the universe.

Stop the thread right here!
I think Dee Squared pretty much nailed it down.
I think I'll have to save that for future reference.

Yes, Thankyou Dave.
As a first year CP you have been duly initiated and recognize your responsibilities to a tee. (Or is that a Dee??)

That's amazing. How does DeeSquared know so much about my life? I gotta get off this Internet thing. It's really got me thinkin!
Great Description!

I couldn't start a new thread (for some reason) so I went and found an old one that seemed appropriate.

I wanted to share with everyone something really cool.... a letter that was sent recently-

Dear Ladies & Gentlemen,

Enclosed please find a check for $365 for your worthy organization. The money is from the New England frisbee community. For the past six or seven years, my wife and I and many others have run an annual frisbee golf (disc golf) doubles tournament followed by a fundraising auction. Players bring their frisbee memorabilia, as well as any other salable items from their households, for the auction. We combine these events, plus a pot-luck supper, into one fun-packed day, and generally split the proceeds between a frisbee cause and “real” charities such as yours.

This year we raised $2,920, with half going to a new disc golf course being built in Northampton, MA, and the other half split between the following four charities:

Abby’s House
Jeremiah’s Inn
The Christopher Reeves Foundation
The American Cancer Association

You are in good company.

While we understand that this small, almost symbolic contribution represents a drop in the bucket, we still are happy and proud to share just a little, and can only hope that our community and frisbee organization (The New England Frisbee Association) will someday possess even half the idealism and selflessness that fuels yours.

I am not worthy. It's not just Jason and Kelley, but all of the folks up here that make a New England a special place to participate in disc sports. To every selfless TD, and to the seemingly endless line of sefless players and volunteers in NEFAland, I say- THANK YOU.

Thanks for sharing your story with the disc golf community and for your more than symbolic gesture. For most disc golf clubs, any additional funds are very appreciated. We always have upgrade/upkeep needs. Also, I'm sure the other recipients are grateful as well. Kudos!!!

Do "Course Pros" still exist anymore? Other than a designation on the PDGA directory, do most courses and clubs still designate a Course Pro? Are they registered Pros with the PDGA or does that not matter?

The term "course pro" is a vestige of Ball Golf. Ed Headrick used it when he first started planting courses. They were a good contact for the course, and also sold discs there.

Nowadays, a local club can designate some one their course pro,and it can mean whatever the club wants it to mean, but it really doesn't have any meaning anymore.

A course pro works way to hard for free.

Happy Birthday QuickDisc ;)

The bet is scratch and correction to the above... Megan and I will be beating Marka up together. :D He says he prefers 2 on 1 but I don't think he really knows what he's in for.

P.S. I am in desperate need of Marka's measurements so I can have the skirt made. Come on Tejas, I'm counting on you for this vital information. I only need three measurements - waist, hip and inseam - post or send a pm! Thanks. :)

PB&J :) more like PB and Pineapple .

He collects $2 a day and sells you the most expensive plastic on the market in the U.S.

Other than that, he just pisses off everyone who doesn't brown their nose on his *****.

marka's measurements.... I'd only be guessing, but I'd say somewhere around this:

32-33" waist
hips ??? (i try and avoid looking that low on him)
32" inseam (he's not so tall, but he *might* need a 34" inseam. just build him a miniskirt, and don't worry about the inseam :) )
