View Full Version : Disc Golf in the dark day-light savings is Cool

Oct 01 2002, 03:08 PM
Day-light savings is coming and for the first time since I became a disc golfer I am looking forward to it. Te reason is beacause I bought a bunch of thill fishing lure lights at basspro.com to glue on my discs. THIS IS THE GREATEST THING TO HAPPEN TO GOLF AT NIGHT EVER. Glow discs stink in comparison. These lights make it a pleasure to play at in the dark I encourage everyone to go buy one tonight. They are the size of a good n plenty, they are waterproof, you can turn them on and off and they last up to 20 hours. I tried ducktapeing ont to the top of my 158 candy firebird and it hardly effected the fight, my guess is that it would take about 10 feet off a 400 foot drive. If you were like me and feared daylight savings time go buy one of these lights today, You will be the envy of everyone else at the course. THe only problem with these lights is if you shank your shot people can see just how bad you are from well over a thousand feet away.

I think we're actually switching back to standard time, we are in daylight savings now. But I still get your point.

The lights are pretty awesome...I still have the one Jeff O gave me in Waco. Only problem I have with them is the $3.54 price tag EACH!!!

Household Goop® works great for attaching winter ribbons to golf discs. It is far more reliable than duct tape and can be peeled off with only a little effort in May. It would probably also be great for the little lights. If the lights are glued under the flight plate, the physics of flight suggests that it would create little drag because it is under the rim in the turbulence zone. I recommend gooping at least 24 hours in advance of throwing.

You know, it just occurred to me that not everyone has a bag full of Z-plastic like I do, so use your discretion. But Z-plastic would be great with lights because they'd shine right through

although clear discs do work best these little lights can even shine through a 200 gram black Jaguar

I found 1.5" glow sticks super cheap.

What are people using to attach them to discs?

medical tape works real good. only problem is that it leaves a resin ring on the disc afterwards. but works great.

I have to hype the Fly By Nite Glow disc. Persoanally I don't understand the people who glue/tape lights or glow juice saturated cotton balls to their discs. I've seen people using this method and I was not impressed with either the flight of the disc nor the ability to see it. In fact I couldn't see the disc at all. Plus you can hear the tape creating wind resistance and even flapping. I would much rather use a black light to glow the disc and get the true flight pattern out of it and still be able to see the disc. The ribbon in the snow thing just boggles my mind and I don't even want to think about it. I think that would seriously change how the disc flies. It sounds like the fishing light deal would be the best alteration, but would still change the flight charctaristics somewhat. But back to Fly By Nite. I recently ordered one of their discs and I think it's the best idea in glow disc golf. They have taken a ROC/Cobra type disc and carved a groove on the inside of the rim. In this groove snaps a 22 1/2" glow stick. The weight is hard to tell but I think it's in the 160-165ish range. I normally throw in the 350ish range and I can throw this Fly By Nite disc 300 feet. Plus it glows better than anything I've seen. The whole rim of the disc glows BRIGHTLY for 12 hours and replacement glow sticks can be bought in bulk for cheaper. They are currently rebuilding their website but can be contacted by emailing flybynite@mail.cmisp.com or 1-866-FLY-NITE. They are currently working on a driver model. I'll be first in line to check that out. Anyone else used Fly By Nite discs?

Try using a flash on your glow discs. It works great unless the park is closed for the night.

Oct 03 2002, 01:47 PM
A flash doesn't seem to work as well or last as long as the 12" black light I got from Wal-Mart. Two swipes with the black light and the disc is all glowed up.

Alright, I'll have to get one. How long does it last (glow)?

Oct 04 2002, 01:08 PM
The glow lasts long enough to retrieve it and throw it again, but I always hit it with the black light again for sh*ts and giggles. It also attracts less attention in closed parks. Check it out. But if the Fly By Nite guys get a driver with snap in glow stick I will probably switch over and lose the Black Light.

the fishing light puts glow discs to shame. Once you try it I guarantee you will never use a glow disc at night again. It is much smaller than a glow stick and can be easily seen over a thousand feet away. Plus it is reusable, in the long run it is cheaper than glow sticks

I tried it in Dallas last week. A guy gave me a little glow stick ("bend-n-glo" style, not LED) and a piece of electrical tape. Worked great! The other guy on our card had the LED kind Patrick likes. Now that thing was bright!

They work great.

I had been experimenting with some "mood" lighting for my xterra, so I had a few LED diodes sitting around, and a few watch batteries. I sandwiched a diode around a battery and taped it to the top of a roc. Man! I have'nt played night golf, yet, but I think this setup will work great, and it is cheaper than everything but glowsticks. bulk LEDs are cheap as hell, and batteries can be had for about 3 for $2. I'll have to find the right kind of tape to handle the super dewy nights in charlotte. I will set up a set for our wednesday night tournaments on my drivers. should make it easier... oh yeah, and you get a cool siren effect when you toss em too!

I use a purple Photon micro-lite to charge my glow discs. It's small and produces enough UV to give discs a good glow. Photon makes a UV model but it is a couple more $$$ and the purple works fine for me.

Saw some guys at the Farm Life Open this past weekend in Williamston,NC using the fishing lite. WOW! I have tried every suggestion on this board. The black light option has always been the best option for me without actually sticking something on the plate of the disc. I was amazed at how well the fishing light worked. There is no way you could ever lose a disc again at night. You can see it forever! Even if you threw it in a pond or lake, I bet you could still see it blinking (considering the pond isnt over 15ft deep)

I may try these! They made for some great trails and flight patterns.

a friend and I tried the glow discs and the ydidnt work. we have a baseball field next to the course and they have teh lights on all night. and a glow stick taped on is just to much of a bother so we switched it around a little. we cut a glow stick open and pored the liquid onto the discs. this worked great.

kinda expensive unless you can get glow sticks on the cheap. we can get 2 discs from one stick and that will keep them well lit for 9 holes.

you also get this really cool glowing dyed disc for one round. i hope that stuff isn't toxic.

The fishing lights are all we have been using here for a couple of years now. Nothing else even comes close. About $3 for 20 hours of light. Can be switched on and off at need.

Any info on where to get these fishing lights? Sounds like something I would like to try out.

I have seen the cheaper prices at Academy Sports. They are about $2.50 there. Play It Again Sports usually has them here in the DFW area. I'm sure you could go into most sporting good stores and head to the bait area. Look for the night glow floats and you should be able to find the replacement lights. Like was mentioned earlier, you just push the top of the light up and down to turn it on and off. We just use some tape to put them on the top center of the flight plate.

I have been playing disc golf at night for years now. We have always used fishing lunkers, the kind you bend and shake. They last all night. They are about as wide as the wire running to your mouse and about 1 1/2 inches long. I have always used scotch tape to attach them to the disc. Never had a problem unless they get wet. There is a store in Santa Cruz that sells them two for a dollar. I also bought a whole bunch at an army surplus store once. I offered him $10 for the whole box (50).

As far as altering the flight of my disc. If there is any it is so slight that I can not tell the difference. I know if I played with a glow disc, it would effect my throw far more than attaching a lunker to my favorite disc. I want to play with the disc that I usually play with.

Even better: Get some of those lights (the little on-off electric type) and then get a packet of velcro squares. They are about a half inch square. Attach the rough (hooks) square to the bottom of a disc or two, then wrap the soft square around the little light. They have their own backing adhesive, so it's very easy. The advantage is you can then quickly pull the light off and stick it on a different disc in about a second!
No noticeable flight altering affect.

If you do like we have done over the last few years, you may actually learn to play a little better. We play without lights and glow discs. It's not hard if you stay quiet and listen for your disc. Also if you throw good shots. It's amazing how many long putts and good shots are thrown in total darkness.

Blarg is right, get the led lights and velcro them on. the lights i use have replacable batteries and are waterproof. The lights I use are called Inova and are available at Academy Sports. They are meant to be a key chain, just take the key part off and you have a great nite lite. The only thing is that I do different is put the hook part on the light and the soft part on the disc, this way will last a lot longer as the soft part will wear out quicker on the light due to switching from disc to disc.
Once you start doing this you can use any disc in your bag, not just the ones that have lights taped to them.

Mine have lasted for about 4 months and still work like brand new compared to the stick lights that wear out quickly and if you shine it at your opponant just before his drive or putt, he can't see. :D

This is the light I was talking about. It comes in red, blue, green and white.
The blue works the best. They cost $5.99 at Academy Sports.
