View Full Version : Rookie of the Year
Who are the top candidates out there?
from Region 3:
Brian Skinner of Chesapeake VA has won B tiers each of the last 2 weekends (the second over his bud Zilllllla in a playoff) to vault himself into the race. He also finished 6th in the Old Dominion Showdown and won the Va Doubles Championship with Robzillllla.
Chris Lee of Raleigh has won an event or 2 as well and was 3rd at the Dogwood Crosstown ahead of KC among others.
I know Tic Tac Owston from Kingsport has had a good year as well with a couple of victories.
I think Wayne Brown was top rookie at the worlds (39th?)
Who else is out there?
Dagon Owen had a great rookie year, including 36th at Worlds and 27th at the USDGC.

Don't they have to be from Michigan?
chris- they changed that rule when ellis left the board.

I'm thinkin Josh Anthon is a top candidate - winner of at least one Super Tour, and a top ten Worlds finish has got to put him up there. Nice kid too /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Craig is right. I played a few rounds with him and he has game. Plus a supertour win looks good on his resume.
I was thinking Anthon, but I found MPO results for him from 2001:

I also think that Skinner, Lee and Owston all took cash last year.
Joe Klosky is a very good player from PA. Basically only played half the year as a pro and has a win and 1200 bucks. Best pure talent I've seen in a rookie for quite some time.
if your cash comes after the worlds in the preceding year you remain eligible. anthon, while a great player and an incredible putter was a rookie of the year candidate for 2001 according to DGWN.

So is it the Rookie of the Year & 1/2? If your 1st win comes after the 2nd Worlds, does it count?
chris
Nov 19 2002, 03:48 PM
That doesn't sound fair. I just started playing last year so I think I qualify for Rookie-Of-The-Year this year, but now I have to compete with rooke-of-the-year & 1/2's now?

It's a very complicated formula for qualifying and then I think Todd Branch picks the winner. I'm probably wrong but definitely funny.
Josh Anthon rookie of the year!
Kris Hutter, from Joliet, IL should definitely be considered, look him up. He has a huge arm, great putt, and he's only getting better. I definitely hope that everybody considers him as well.
I'll second John Bradway about Joe Klosky. He has only been playing for a couple of years overall (I think, this is his first year as a pro) and has a heckuva lotta game. He is also one of the coolest, most down to earth guys on the planet. Did anyone see his 80 foot putt on the Warwick DiscTV thing?

We have a local in Columbus that has only played D-Golf for a few years named Tyler Horne. I believe he is 19 or 20 and only played about ten tourneys this year in Open. He has a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place all B tiers and about $1000 total. If you ever play with this guy you will be amazed at his attitude and his distance. If you have not heard his name, you will soon enough. I think he wants revenge at the USDGC, we don't have many courses like that around here in Ohio......what a rough four rounds for the newbie!(laughing)
bs
P.S. I forgot to tell you he throws 500 feet with his right hand and about 400 feet left handed. Discraft, you better pick this guy up!!!

Chris Lee. Three b-tier victories. Over $2,500 in winnings. Numerous seconds and thirds and a fourth at the Dogwood Crosstown Classic Supertour (behind only Snoop, Schultz, Climo). This is in NC/SC where the competition is very tough at every event.
If he hadn't bagged so long this would be his third full year as a pro, though.
Sorry Chris, just calling it like I see it.

Dagon Owen is quickly becoming a player who will always have to be reckoned with.
Besides, to all you sandbagging theorists, Chris Lee has been Pro for 5 years. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Are we talking statistics or opinions? If your talking statistics from the past year and not a year and a half, how can you not choose C.Lee?/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
C.Lee has only cashed in about half his tournaments (55%)
I would have to say Dagon is definitly the Texas rookie of the year. I can think of consecutive b- tier wins and him cashing in most others.

I've got an opinion for you too Haney.
Josh Anthon was up for rookie of the year last year. It's either Dagon or Chris Hereen.

I might have voted for Chris about 6 years or so ago, but he has such an entrenched reputation as a sandbaggin' machine that it would make a mockery of the award for him to win. It would be like Brandon Bailey winning it.
No offense to either of the named players, but if you are going to play in the top 25% of your am division for 5 - 10 years and then turn pro, IMO you should not expect cudos for doing what you should have done 4 to 9 years before.
Mitch Sanderfan or Joe Klosky are the two Rookie of the Year contenders out our the MADC region.
Incase anyone is confused; this is my opinion.
And in case anyone wants to look up info on Mitch, his last name is Sonderfan. Good point tho, Nick. Both Mitch and Joe started playing around the same time (a little over 2 years ago, I think), so neither could ever be considered a bagger.

Dagon has had a great rookie year. After playing with him when he just turned pro and not cashing in the Double-O last year to winning the Capital of Texas Open and cashing in A tiers, he has turned his game on and proven to be a great rookie.
Congrats also to Danny on his 2nd place finish at Veterans.

After playing with him when he just turned pro and not cashing in the Double-O last year to winning the Capital of Texas Open and cashing in A tiers, he has turned his game on and proven to be a great rookie. Last I heard he was still looking for a sponsor (was that you John I heard nominating him for rookie of the year, hint, hint).
Congrats also to Danny on his 2nd place finish at Veterans.
Joe Klosky started i think May/June of 2000 and i started August 2000. I turned pro last year at the Yetter (in september) so i guess i wouldn't get votes for this being my first full pro year? Either way, look out for Joe, hes a killer out there. Hes got a win this year and i have two, but i also had a handfull of mullet showings and 5 1 out of cashes, 3 A tiers and 2 B tiers. So it was almost a great year, but hell i'll take what i did and like it /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif Thats just my 2 cents.

Mitch Sonderfan, Joe Klosky & Dagon Owen are all worthy of rookie of the year. Great talents and great attitudes, just what disc golf needs! If I had a vote it would go to the Jersey kid Mitch, of course I'm from Joisey too!
I believe Dagon had a string of at least 3 big wins in a row around the Cap Tx Open time period. It was a pleasure having him win his first PDGA event at one of my tournaments. He's carrying himself like a pro should.

Matt LaCourte is worthy. He is kind of a rookie since he only plays a couple tourneys a year. Does that qualify?

That is what I am talking about. Matt for President !!!!!!!
i feel that Chris Heeren from WI would be a good canidate for rookie of the year. He has cashed 100% of his tournaments this year. Placed well at many supertours also. He has a good attitude on the course and I feel this is important as well as how well you played.
good luck Chris
Give the rookie of the year to any rookie that's won a supertour cause man, thats a tough thing to do. My best opportunities i threw a last round mullet round. Anyway, thanks for the words Matt, Nick and Dan!

The R.O.Y. for the 2002 season should be Dagon Owen. Look at the numbers he posted as a rookie! $3000 which was 37th(ish) on the money list. Top rookie at The 2002 Pro World's, followed up by the top rookie at the USDGC/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif Congrats teammate!
Dagon, still like the vote for Daniel Stacey though, too bad he is Honorable mention. D Stace finishing 2nd at VPO really showed me whats up though
Alright people, just give it to Dagon already, sheesh. The dude must rock out there, i'd love to play a round with him someday.
Jerry Crumpton, you're comparing Dagon to Joe and myself at a tounrament where neither Joe nor myself were at, that hardly seems fair. Naturally he finished above us, we weren't there!
At least see us play before you totally belittle our ability on the course.

Mitch,
I would never belittle your ability if you are even in contention for Rockie of the year. You guy's all rock. However you are "be-ing little" by making your suggestion that I attacked you in any way. I only asked how you did with a question mark at the end. And yes the dude does "ROCK!"
Once Again my vote goes to: Dagon Owen /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

dagon (i have no idea who you are, come to bhmo so i can watch u paly) is on team discraft, correct? when will the team discraft site be updated? the one on the discraft website is way old. jw
> However you are "be-ing little" by making your suggestion that I attacked you in any way. I only asked how you did with a question mark at the end.
Jerry, whether intentional or not--and I'll take your word that it was not intentional--your post concerning Joe and Mitch's performance at the HOF certainly appears, at first glance, to belittle them. That would not be the case had you put a blank line between the question about Mitch's and Joe's performance and your comment about Dagon's performance, but without the space, I can certainly understand how Mitch could read it as belittling his ability and/or accomplishments.
Hey , Jerry wasn't the Hall of fame classic this year? so in actuallity that shouldn't be considered in the voting Right? I believe that Dagon clearly established the right stats LAST YEAR to be considered ROY. Mitch should be second with Herren rounding out the top three.
sincerly, former R.O.Y

Ellis, You are correct about the website being a little bit behind. Carlo Pelg and Ray Johnson were placed on the team since sometime before the 2002 World's. I've been on the team since late September '02. Cam Todd, Mike Worm Young, Lesli Herndon, Dan Bradley, Eric McCabe, and Dagon Owen are also not included on the website but are very much part of the family/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif Give the company some time, i think they're busy making QUALITY plastic.

ck34
Jun 05 2003, 02:09 AM
The PDGA tracks players who first turn Pro. Guru compiles their stats at the end of the season for the Board to review. Not sure whether your rookie year is the first time you play and cash or the first year you renew as a pro and play the whole year in pro.
please define first turn pro, is it 1st time accepted cash?
jconnell
Jun 05 2003, 09:16 PM
"turn pro" as defined in the rule book:
Rule 804.08 F. Amateur Status: A player relinquishes amateur status by competing in a Professional division of a PDGA sanctioned event and accepting prize money for finishing in that professional division. A player also relinquishes amateur status by accepting prizes in lieu of prize money for finishing in that professional division. Accepting money for winning an ancillary contest such as an ace pool does not cause a player to relinquish his or her amateur status. A player may also relinquish amateur status by registering in a professional division with the PDGA.
So I would imagine Guru starts tracking as soon as any of those three things occurs.

What if someone turned pro in october and only played two events pro to finish the 2002 year. Is 2003 their rookie year?
ck34
Jun 06 2003, 02:43 AM
I believe it's the first full year as a pro. Several top Ams turn pro after Am Worlds and their rookie year is the following season. That's how we've done our Minnesota ROY for over 20 years.
