View Full Version : ILLINOIS & INDIANA DISC GOLFERS

Mar 22 2003, 10:49 AM
We are adding a course in Indiana this weekend. It's 25 miles south of Indpls in Trafalgar. It's an 18 hole disc course added to our 9 hole ball course. You'll go around the same fairways twice, but each hole has a different tee and basket, so the front 9 and back 9 are different. The web site for the ball course is www.indianspringsgolf.com (http://www.indianspringsgolf.com)
Call 317-878-5926 for more info.

Hey everybody! I was in Illinois and Indiana this wkend. I played 3 courses. EVERY person I saw/played through was as nice and friendly as I have ever experienced. Being from North Carolina, I am very used to friendly behavior, but I wanted to say how much I appreciated y'all.
That's it! MG

Thinking about playing the Indiana State Championships @ Lemon Lake in August. My sister lives in Cedar Lake.

Last time I played LEMON LAKE was in August of '00. It was 18 then. Pretty nice. What's the 27 like? Does it bring the lake into play? I've played RIVERSIDE in. I really like it. It's a fun little course with nice scenery. Boy, those mosquitos could carry you off though. MUNSTER was alright.
Played the Illinois State Championships in '98. Really liked WEST PARK.

3 newest holes cut out of woods
after hole 1

6 holes out in open and on other side
of road after 17 you cross the road

this is definitely worth making the
trip to play

I think the problem is mc naughten is the only real championship course in both states. Lemon lake is the closest but it still not championship. Lots of fun however. Chicago needs a real club that is organized and dedicated. Joliet runs great tournys and has some organization but they either need to work with the chicago players or the chicago players need to get more organized. We made some efforts in lombard but had way too many egos and problems arose. The land is out there, no one gets organized and does anything about it. John, I hope Gary goes for the 18, I would love playin that type of layout. I can already picture some amazing holes. They need something that beats you down and makes you play better every time. I have been living out east for the past few months working, and 80% of the courses are better than anything in illinois...thats the fact.

Jay,
If it were just as easy as you say it is. We have one heck of an organized club. In 3 years our club has grown to 40 members, hosting 5 tournaments, weekly best shot leagues, 1 Safari Event a month, not too mention club meetings, & other disc golf activities throughout the year. It has taken over a year to get the Round Lake Area Park District to provide materials so we can enhance that course. We have provided Gurnee Park District with a proposal for a championship calibur course. They have the land & money but are reluctant to install a course. It has taken 2 years to get Waukegan Park District to add 3 more holes to Bevier Park in Waukegan. It doesn't happen over night. We are gaining momentum but need more support.

Brett,

I know u have done some good things up north. No pdga events until recently(this year I believe-August?). Im glad you are growing but for the number players in the area more should be pdga, and more courses should be up..round lake is an average course. no real challange. I hear u have cement tee's. is that correct? I know it doesnt happen over night, but most courses in chicago area have become worse rather than improve. They have been put in and left behind. I know it's easy too preach and do nothing. I was always willing to put in what ever time I had to help. Im not one to organize a club however. We had a C teir at lombard that worked well. But certain people ruined it(not to name names) and it was taken out of the illiana series. No one was willing to step up. I hope you get your championship course in gurnee. If you do get some designers to make it, that is my suggestion. (the harder the better)too many 2/3 hole courses in illinois.

Jay,
You are correct, we haven't had any PDGA events until the upcoming Illinois Open in August. One: we have not had the attendance, & two: Bevier Park is a 9 hole course. Our last 2 non pdga tournaments have drawn 66(Sept02) & 39(March03) players @ Bevier Park in Waukegan. Round Lake has granted us permission so we are finally with attendance & an 18 hole course, running a PDGA event. We are encouraging our members to join the PDGA but not pushing them. It's their choice. Fairfield has dirt tee ravines right now. The park district will not put concrete in so we are in the process of installing limestone pads. I wouldn't call Round Lake an easy course by no means. The front is open but 6 holes are over 300ft & 3 are over 400ft. The back has many holes the require technical shots.

Jay and Chicago-area golfers,
A tough course that many of you may not have played before is Ross Hills in West Lafayette, IN (just down I-65). The front nine are fairly open but longer while the back nine are still long but more technical. Check out (www.geocities.com/dg19070/TDGC/rosshills/rosshillsmap.jpg) for a course map. The Tippecanoe Disc Golf Club will be making lots of improvements to the course this spring and summer (concrete teepads, alternate pins and new holes). I will be TDing a C-Tier event there on October 4 as part of the Illiana Fall Series.

John

I played ross hills a few years ago. The back nine was a lot of fun, i wish the front had a little more too it. With the land you had to work with it was a fun course. Very long blues..Also one of few that have all three tee lengths on every hole..Challange but still not close to championship.

This discussion started out asking about a newsletter...did anyone start one? If so, I would be interested in receiving it. We have a pay-per-play south of Indy.

Debra

I never heard that the newsletter got started. However, there are lots of ways to keep up with the disc golf happenings within Indiana. Obviously, the PDGA site is a resource for sanctioned events happening in Indiana. The IndianaDiscGolfers group within Yahoo is one of the best ways to connect with the rest of the state. Visits to some Indiana club websites will give you an idea what is happening in specific areas within IN. Michiana DGC, Bloomington DGC, Tippecanoe DGC, Hamilton County DG Union, and Logansport DGC (that's all I remember off the top of my head) all have websites with information of what is going on in their areas.

Looking forward to checking out your new course, but it may be awhile before we make it down with prime tournament season starting. Any plans on holding any events at your course?

John

We have a tournament scheduled for mid June. It'll be posted on PDGA. Rob Sparks and Greg Eicholz are working on it. Thanks for the info!

Brett, are you coaching this weekend? Are you letting Jon win that Safari unopposed?

May 09 2003, 11:01 AM
Bruce, I am coaching. We have a double header on Saturday. It is the last Saturday game of the season & we only have 1.5 weeks left. 35 games is a long season, especially when all Saturdays booked. The only way i'll make it is if there is a downpour on Friday night/Saturday morning. Then my game will be cancelled & i'll give those guys a run for there $. Jojo will be there as well.
