View Full Version : Wife broke ankle playing disc golf :>(

Jul 27 2003, 10:40 PM
My wife Wendy and I discovered disc golf this past April and instantly fell in love with the game...love the exercise, challenge and bonding time together....

Our local course (Chestnut Ridge) in Western New York is very challenging being wooded with lot's of trees and ravines and ridges...

Well, climbing down a ravine Friday to get over a small creek to the ridge for her tee pad she slipped and mangled her ankle very bad. She had to have surgery with pins and a plate and has a cast and now will use a walker for a couple of months...

We used to play everyday after work (weather permitting) and a couple of rounds each day on weekends...I feel so bad for her (and myself) cause she and I really love the game and she is out of commission for a while...I will still play a little but it will not be the same without her and I won't be able to play as often as she will need my help a lot...

Well, she has been such a trooper through it all and I know she is in a lot of pain...

Can't wait till she mends so I can have my disc golf buddy back...

Just wanted to share this sad story and see how others dealt with similar circumstances...

Please offer her any condolenses and encouragement you can in this thread as she loves disc golf people and would love to know others are thinking of her and sending there prayers and blessings for a speedy recovery...

Thanks fellow disc golfers!

Bob

So sorry to hear about the injury to Wendy. I sure hope things get better for her very soon! It is just awesome that you are your wife get to play disc golf together. My wife and I have a lot of things that we like to do together, but disc golf is just not one of them. I'm sure I would be playing even more if she loved the game like I do. Best of luck to you and Wendy in making it through this "injured reserve" time.

I had the misfortune to watch a pal destroy an ankle while playing dg a few years back. Sounds like an injury similar to your wife's. He broke it on the course and he rehabbed it on the course. First rounds a number of months later were on crutches (a waist pack with room for a few discs worked just fine so he didn't have anything to carry but crutches) and eventually he got down to one crutch, then a cane. He has not reinstituted his run-up yet (if ever) but has come out of the experience as a stronger player. Best of luck and keep that limb elevated.

Hey Bob! All does not have to be lost...perhaps she could still assist at the TD's table during tournaments. Most score-keepers would love the assistance of an extra body to help them arrange cards in order, check addition, read aloud the scores and to double-check data entry. All of which would allow your wife to have a comfortable seat next to the TD! While it isn't nearly as much fun as playing, it's probably the next closest thing to it...and the bonus is she'd get to see the results sooner than any of the players! /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

Hey Bob! Sorry to hear about Wendy's injury. We hope she makes a speedy and complete recovery. My wife Susan and I played mixed doubles at the Am Worlds and we know how great it is to share disc golfing together. I suggest she wear high tops on the course as they provide much needed ankle support. Also, maybe use a walking stick. Disc golf couples rule! See you on the courses.

Hey Bob, sorry to hear about Wendy's misfortune, but I would look on the bright side. Who will be able to trump her relating that she broke her ankle for the game of disc golf?

I broke my leg on a motorcycle when I was young and 21, and I still remember how frustrating it was being in a cast for 3 months. I used to tell myself I'd never take for granted the advantage of having two healthy legs. But once you heal, that becomes too easily forgotten. Tell Wendy to hang in there. Time is the great healer.

You hang in there too. The bright side is that you two will probably be playing before long, and disc golf will be good rehab exercise for the ankle, if approached carefully. Till then, do you guys have a portable basket she can use to putt at (with you retrieving her throws)?

Thanks everyone for the encouragement, condolences and suggestions...

Wendy loves the idea of helping out with the TD table at tournaments and yes, we do have a portable practice basket so she can at least continue practicing her putting...(I'll retrieve her discs of course...
