View Full Version : Throwing OB...where is the 2nd shot from?

when i play in the monthly minis or in sunday doubles here in columbus, we take our ob shot from where it was last in bounds (this can be in the air). however, as i was jsut watching the 2001 USDGC, it seems that OB was played differently. they had to take their shots from where the disc last *touched* in bounds. for instance, the teeshot would physically have to skip/roll/etc. in bounds for the player to get the distance. ok, so im guessing that they way the pros were playing in the video was the right way, as compared to the rules in weekly doubles...but then i saw something that further confused me. on hole #17, al schack throws a shot that skips on the green, into the out of bounds water. then, al (for whatever reason) has to take his 3rd shot from the tee...this doesnt make any sense to me. any rules buffs out there? can you explain this to me? my first real pdga sanctioned tourney is next week, so i thought i should know! thanks a lot, ellis robinson

There was a ring of pine needle bales that circled the #17 pin. Anything that ended up outside the circle, regardless of whether it travelled in bounds first, was OB with a mandatory rethrow from the tee. This was a special rule for USDGC.

Any other instance of OB was treated the same as you describe for your league. Maybe the camera angle made it look different.

In 2001, #17 had the special rule but now it's part of the rule book. The TD can now specify a drop zone where players have to play their next throw if they land in a certain OB area.

It's possible the hole where you were watching the skips was #12 where your shot can be thrown hyzer over the road/parking lot immediately off the tee so unless you skip or fly over inbounds down the fairway, you'll be back at the tee because you were never inbounds.

rule 803.08 covers OB.

Generally you have 3 options unless otherwise limited by the TD.

1. Stroke penalty. You play the disc from where it was last inbounds (the most common method).

2. Stroke and distance penalty. You take a stroke penalty, but do not get credit for any distance and rethrow from the previous mark.

3. Drop Zone. If there is one provided.

The player can opt for whichever of these is to their advantage though usually only the first 2 are available. If you throw OB early, and you will be marking your disc in a bad position, it is sometimes better to re-tee with a stroke penalty.

The TD can also make a special rule to speed play saying that the disc must touch the ground before skipping/rolling OB to play it at the edge of the island. This helps when it is difficult to tell whether the disc was over IB and you are short on tournament help and can't position a spotter out there.

It speeds up play by taking the arguments out of whether it was over fair ground or not. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

A few I've seen lately say if the disc does not stay inbounds on the island, next shot is from the drop zone.
