View Full Version : How far do you have to travel to play a disc golf course?
I am doing a survey on how you have to travel to play a disc golf course. I live in CT and I have to go 40 miles. I am wondering how many dedicated disc golfers have to travel over 100 miles to play a course. As more courses go in throughout the country, hopefully you will all have a local course to play.

I'm w/ Keith:
12 Feet to Tee #3 for 9 holes on my property.
9 Miles for 24 holes on Cement.
50 Miles? over 10 courses w/ Cement.
I'm in the same boat as you Bill, it takes around 1:15 to reach a basket course (18 hole) Fairfield-U is about 45 mins. but there is only 9 or 12 holes and too many moving obstacles (students). That is why a bunch of us meet every Tues. and Thurs. at Bushnell Park(downtown Hartford) for some old fashion object golf. The season will start up again April 8th (begining of Daylight Savings Time), we meet at Vito's by the Park between 5-5:30. Come out and we'll show you the course.

I should mention, I also have only a few feet to travel to play my fun ace run disc golf course on my property. It is nice to see more and more people putting a course on their properties. It is a good idea to benefit both you and the lady of the house. If you are lazy doing yard work, a course in your yard will make you want to keep the place looking in tip top shape. The wife will be so happy to see you out there cutting the grass and raking leaves when you are not playing on a course you have the greatest pride in.

18 inches to tee #1 on my six basket, multi-tee private course. No pitch and putt here- length ranges from just over 200 feet to well over 400 feet.
Five minutes from Fayetteville's only course- 18 baskets, dirt tees.
Just under two hours from the closest 18 hole course with concrete tees and PDGA approved baskets- Tulsa'a McClure Park.

About 10 minutes to the local course with mostly natural pads and five concrete. I can also play in the yard, if you count the two baskets I use for putting and approach practice. No room for any real holes.
Another hour to Tishomingo State Park (Miss.); One hour 15 minutes to three courses in Huntsville, AL.; two hours to Tupelo,MS. and there are several about 21/2-3 hours away in Birmingham, AL., Miss. and Tenn. RwC
I live in Tampa-The U.S.F, Clearwater and St. Pete courses are half an hour away. Sarasota, Brooksville and Orlando courses are about an hour away. It was 79 degrees and beautiful for the Clearwater Ice Bowl yesterday.

The closest course for me is about 12 minutes away; it is a short 9 hole course with cement pads. I have another six courses within 30 minutes of my house. I have another six that are within an hour's drive. I feel rather lucky!

Down Under Rosedale, well about 400 feet further.
Swope-12.54 Miles
WyCo-20.80 Miles
Olather-27.04 Miles
Lawrence-44.08
Topeka=66.94 Miles away
Not included
Cliff Drive Park-Temp working at getting perm-2.2 miles
Blue Valley Park-Temp meeting with Parks on Wednesday-3.9 miles
Teds Dread-About 3 miles closer than WyCo.
Lamoni-Less than 117 miles away for 2 good courses
Columbia-about 120 miles away for 3 courses.
Des Moines-Less than 3 hour drive to hit the courses.
While living in Chicago, I had one course less than 30 miles, Madison Meadows, flat terrain, some long shots, and natural barriers, but otherwise, I planned at least an hour to head to Joliet, or to Hammond IN, or north, until they took Libertyville from 18to9, that was one of the best 18 holes in the Chicago area, too bad they did not feel the same way then.
Bottom line, we will drive to play on good courses. I just chose to live close to all of the great courses here in town!

For 2 1/2 yrs, I had to travel 100 miles to play the Burns Park course in North Little Rock, or 150 miles to play the Shelby Forest course in Memphis (Millington?), TN.
Now I have lived in Dallas for the last 11 years, and there are courses within an hour of me that I have never played (ZBoaz, Denton, Grand Prairie, DBU) and ones that I have only played once or twice in the last 10 years (McKinney, The Colony, LL Woods, the non-Fritz Irving park, Cain Park in Athens).
Go figure...

Carl, Carl...21 holes in Lubbock (TWO cliff shots!). Salsa, the Roswell course is about two years old located on the west side of town behind the BLM offices in Enchanted Lands Park. It's a nine hole, relatively short, but designed for putting in pro pads as players developed. Call Leo Sanchez 505-623-1779 if you ever go back. For me <10 miles to Mackenzie Park - Lubbock and in the future <2 miles to our second course.
thanks P-Katt, will do. might go thru there on spring break.
I'm:
5 seconds from my polehole in the backyard.
5 min from Oakwood park,10 min from c.p.adams, 12 min from North Valley , 14 min from Kaposia. all excellent courses!!
not very far..... in tulsa....... it is disc golf mecca out here....... about 11 courses in the area...... :D
20 or so mins to the closest course, but over 60 withn 2.5 hours at most!
wagner-18 w cement
starr-9 mats
raintree-9 cement
firefighters-18 cement
all within a 5 minute drive, but they are free city courses and i would only play them as a last resort, or if i didn't have
riverbends-24 cement
stony creek-24 cement
kensington-24 cement
cass benton-18 cement
seymour lake-18 cement
all worlds worthy and within a 30 minute drive, or
hudson mills at 45 minutes.
several other free city courses available from the 5-20 minute drive category are available, but i never play them due to being either pitch and putt or constantly submerged.
lola park at 5 mile and telegraph is a gem of a 9 hole golf course (20 min drive) but always soaked somewhere
bay court in waterford (20-30 min drive) is another 9 hole gem
that i don't play enough but only because the same drive time gets me 24 holes at any of those listed above
10 km (about 6 miles I guess) to my home course
Everything else is a least three times as far.

Id have to say the Detroit area is the best place to live for disc golf. I live 5 minutes from Cass Benton and there are like westa said about 60 Courses within 2.5 or 3 hours from my house. Among them are Flip City, Kensington, Cass Benton, Hudson Mills, Grand Woods, Stoney Creek, Riverbends, The Tobbagan (when its in), Willow Metro Park, Oshtemo, Robert Morris, Coldbrook, Kimble Pines, Fitzgerald the list goes on and on. Michigan is by far the best place to live in the Summer for Disc Golf :D
its just too bad our summers last a month and a half
200' to my object course (winter only :()
5 minutes to Seneca :)
14 seconds to my home object/1 basket course longest hole 200'.
89 miles to Barre Falls
150 miles to Borderland (my fiance's parents live about 20 minutes from Borderland, so I play there the most.)
135 miles to Buffumville
120 miles to pyramids/maple hills (haven't played there yet, but can't wait.)
100 miles from the new Hyzer Creek in NY (haven't played that one, but I have directions.)
10 minutes from the site of the future Greylock view course(I am starting a club in the Berkshires. If there is anyone interested in installing a course in some of the prettiest country in New England please contact me.)
Five days and three thousand miles from the Bend OR course I'm gonna play next week. Yahoo! Ain't no party like a west coast party!

20 courses within an hour drive.
From the shop, 5 miles to two different 9-hole courses;
10 miles to the first 18-hole.
Within a 1/2 hour I have 22 courses. The real problem I have is choosing which one to visit!
Brooklyn New York is Ultimate Central. To play disc golf I have to travel to Rutgers in NJ [$13 on the train] or in upper Westchester [one hour away.] Fortunately, we have devised an object course in Prospect Park.
Chicago is a real golfer's haven. Too bad it's the wrong kind of golf! I travel 36 miles north to Round Lake for a good quality 18 hole course. Joliet is 60 miles away, but getting around in the Chicago area is a frustrating experience.
I wish I lived in Madison...

14 miles to lake park (lewisville, tx...18 holes)
i'm lucky to live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area...easily 20 or so
courses within a 50mile radius or so...
Im a bout 45 min to a hour away from these cources in Oregon. Rockwood Central Park, Portland Adventist School, Estacada Timber Park, Milo McIver State Park, Champoeg State Park, Herbert Hoover Park, Wortman Park, Dabney State Park, Lunchtime Disc Golf Course, Greinfield Park Disc Golf Course, Henry Hagg Lake, Pier Park, McMenamins Grand Lodge. I hear word there is supposed to be one going up within 5 min from me in Lake Oswego, OR I hope it happens sooner rather than later.
there is 8 within a 20 minute drive, 3 are within a bike ride of my home, 1 i can walk to.
Now right now only 1 course is playable, but thats a different story
less than a mile to the nearest, 6 to the next, then 15&20 or so for the next 2.
