Bill, what time are you showing up, and can we bring anything else? Chain saw, hedge trimmer, etc?

Oct 27 2002, 06:48 PM
Dan, I will be there at 9:30 AM on sunday morning rain or shine. Best thing to bring is another energy filled body, if possible, or a shovel and/or a post hole digger. A chain saw may come in handy in a few areas, so bring it , if its no problem.....work left is putting in and also moving the tee posts and digging in the tee boards...nothing to nasty...PIZZA/BEVERAGES and a DISC for all hard working volunteers is on me and the HUDSON VALLEY DISC GOLF CLUB (a.k.a. me)

Sundays workday was a major success-we got ALOT done--18 holes/tee sign posts and tees are in...I/we are basically done till spring when I plan to put in a second set of chains on the front 9 and repaint the "chastity belts" on the back 9 baskets. Updated tee signs and scorecards/maps will be done shortly.
A very BIG thank you to our tristate volunteers Dan Howard, jim Santoro (NY), Brian Yondolino and Scott Yates (NJ), ted phillips and Daver (NY), and Warren Fix, Kraig steffen and Dave Jones (CT), wouldnt have been able to play the fun doubles round w/o you guys! BN

Played the new front 9 yesterday. If you like Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco, then you'll like this layout. Heavily wooded, but a discernible fairway on most holes. Punishment if you miss, reward when you hit it. I like the longer layout on the back 9 (which comprises most of what used to be the original 9 holes). Bill (and everyone that helped out) did a great job, and it's great to have another course in the semi-upstate NY area.

Off season it's free to use the park, between Memorial and Labor Days there's a $5 per car entry charge.

thanks DAN and good to see you yesterday, the front will continue to open up, slowly and deliberatly. It is a tough course to throw near par on even with 3 or 4 par fours included, with the tight front 9 and the much longer and more open back. It is a good challenge and that is what I wanted to create.

The new 18 hole course at FDR State Park rocks! Open holes, tight wooded holes, ace runs, several long true pro par 4s alternating with deucable holes, water hazards and elevation changes make this course instantly one of the Mid-Atlantic region's finest and most challenging courses. No one has shot under 54 in singles yet!

Hope to see YOU there next weekend for the Ice Bowl.

i'll be there sometime this year to change that /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

I don't know Keith, there may be some putting required. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Just kidding, let me know when you'll be up this way again, I want to atone myself for leaving you out to dry in doubles at Warwick.

FDR is a very cool course now, and the fact that I drive past it to go home from work each day makes me very happy. I will be impressed if someone does throw a sub-54 round there, as there really aren't that many deuces, and the 4 par 4s are true 4s that will not be 3'd too often. Hope to see you all at the Ice Bowl.

Just out of curiousity (I'm not looking to wimp out, just trying to make an educated footwear decision), how much snow is on the ground at FDR now? I know that up in Hyde Park (only 40 miles up the Taconic)we've got at least a foot and a half on the ground and it's not all melting by saturday.

We played the course last Sunday and it was quite managable. Less than a foot of snow on the ground, with only a few inches of fresh snow on top of crust. We didn't have to use spotters and didn't lose a single disc.

That being said, I would still recommend waterproof boots and something other than jeans. Those that didn't had wet feet and pants legs after they were done playing.

Waterproof boots can be heavy and throw off your cross step when the leg comes around. I recommend using your normal golf shoes over waterproof socks. Rubber socks by Seal Skins. Get them at the kayak/canoe store. Wear them over wool socks.

One thing I know about from living up here is throwing in the snow!!

The actual name of the product is "SealSkinz WaterBlocker Submersible Waterproof Socks" and they run about $30-$40 per pair.

Jeff - Thanks for the info, it looks like the boots are in and the rollers are out.

I have fallen in ice water while winter kayaking in partly frozen lakes. I wear the sealkin socks and a dry suit and don't feel a thing if the boat tips over. I'm as warm as toast in ice water (32 degrees). Wool sweater and wool pants under the dry suit, wool socks under the sealskinz socks, sneakers. No problem.

If rubber socks over wool socks can do that, then disc golf in snow is NOTHING.

(The dry suit is not necessary)

Yes, but the dry suit would be so stylish.

Mild with highs in the mid 40s today and tomorrow which should melt some of that snow - cold air moves in on Friday and we will have a brilliantly sunny but brisk winter day on Saturday at FDR Park for the Ice Bowl.

Hope to see YOU there. -Jeff

A few weekends ago, I had the pleasure of playing two casual rounds and two tournament rounds at FDR State Park. This was the first opportunity I have had to play the final 18 hole layout in conditions other than Ice Bowl conditions. Folks, this is one of the prettiest and most challenging courses around.

The beauty comes from the elevation changes and water hazards on the front nine, along with the lovely white pine forest that the back nine plays through. The challenge comes from some tough par 3 holes and a whopping five par 4 holes at the course - holes 4,5,10,14 and 18. For reference, a round of 52 is 1000-rated golf and the course record is only 51!

Once again, kudos to Bill Newman and his efforts at getting this gem installed right along the Taconic Parkway. If you visit NYC anytime soon and need to get a quick round in, this course is the one for you.

I agree, very, very nice course with some very challenging holes. Have only played the course twice, once at FDR doubles in Novemeber and just recently at fools fest. Front nine plays mostly in the woods, while the back nine opens up and gives the power drivers a chance to shine. But super tight holes 3 and 16 keep 'em honest. I've been playing for about 7 months now and carded a 59 as my best score yet, with a few missed putts, so the record of 51 held by steve brinster should be broken soon. At fools fest Adam Goodman tied the record and missed it by one shot the next round to take the pro open. Only knock on this course is that its off the interstate and in the summer i hear that the field holes become unplayable. Easily one of the best in the Tristate area, but havent checked out wickham park in Manchester, CT which i hear is a dream.

Its location off the Taconic Parkway is one of its best features! I like courses that are located near major highways. Courses that are located far off the highway are a major pain in the , imo.

A few years ago when the FDR State Park course was only 9 holes I visited the course during the 4th of July holiday, arguably its most popular day throughout the year. Despite [b]thousands of people in the park, the course was still quite playable - no one uses the area of the park where the disc golf course plays through. The only thing you need to watch out for are people near the teepad of hole 10, as there are usually soccer games there; you will also need to take heed for people in the field to the right of the fairway on hole 18. If you like to stay high on the hill and approach the polehole with a hyzer shot (like I do) you'll need to watch your drive. If you throw straight at the polehole and approach through the trees, you'll likely not have an issue. Actually, methinks there is also a short pin position in the summertime on hole 18 to avoid potential conflicts.

I haven't played Wickham yet, but FDR is probably my favorite park around here that I've played. It's got a nice blend of woods and fields, with the open holes not just being huge rips across wide open fields. You will need accuracy and a wide array of shots which is what I like about it. Many courses only challenge one or two aspects of your game, but FDR really is quite encompassing. I think 3 and 16 are a bit ridiculous (3 is deucable though) and 16 seems like an afterthought to me. You walk to the right to get there, then back where you came from to get to 17. Oh well, the sign tells me not to whine so I shall not whine. Great course though.
