View Full Version : New Course in Richmond, Virginia

Dec 18 2002, 03:13 PM
Okay, so it's been a full 14 months since anyone's used this thread, but I have a Dunncroft burning question: Does anyone know what's happened to this course? What is this menacing "New Middle School Construction" signage that I see? And when may I play there again rather than driving the long 34 minutes to Dorey Park?

The good news is that even though you are #160 in Va, you may well be in the top 10 of Richmond since I can't get anyone to play disc golf. Dunncroft is a disc golf enigma. I was told that the baskets had been removed but last weekend I was told that half of the course is playable. I will find out and let you know.

That didn't take too long did it? This is the info that I got from Ken Hansen. Some of the baskets were removed by the county but a few others were stolen. The county will be helping with the installation of the new revised course layout. Some land was taken to make the new road but an additional 15 acres has been added to the park. There will be about 9 holes in this area. The county will supply bulldozers to cut fairways and level the tee pads. There will be 3 tee pads per hole (Fly18 pads?). New construction will begin early next year and should be complete by next summer. Also, there is a new member of the Parks & Rec crew who came from Charlotte. Hopefully this will benefit us as well.

Any more questions?

They will just knock them down with the bulldozers. I think the added land may be wideFopen.

Dang. And I was hoping that Dunncroft #3 would remain as-is -- virtually on the new road. You put some pavement around the basket, and ain't no one gonna be stealing it. Also, it is downright sick that I could be ranked number 10 or better in Richmond when I can't even throw forehand properly.

Thanks, Chris. Some friends and I ignored the No Tresspassing signs and tried playing on Thansgiving Eve, but we got discouraged when basket one was gone. Perhaps we'll trying playing the half-course that still might, maybe, who knows, perhaps, be there.

My understanding is that when they put up the "No Trespassing" signs and started removing baskets, number one disappeared as well. If I went out there, I would have assumed the course had been pulled. I guess we are lucky to have two other courses to play. Dunncroft is the closest to my house but it is the one I played the least. I just didn't like the tee pads. Hopefully all of this will result in a good course.

Any updates on the Dunncroft course? Have they done any work on it? What shape is it in now?

Lowe, there is a sign at the entrance to the course that says it is temporarily closed. I played it yesterday. It is currently nine holes, the 1st is new and the others are old holes. Right now, it is a swamp out there.

Can one of you Richmond guys please give me accurate directions to Gillies Creek Park coming up I-95 North from the south side of Richmond? The directions in the directory are for coming from the north. Do I take Exit 74A or 74C? Then what streets and turns do I need to make to get to Main St? Once I get to Main I can find the course from there. I was there 2 weeks ago, but it took forever to find the way to get to Main. (Not having a good map didn't help matters.)

Okay Lowe, here is my best guess since I never come from across the river. The exit may be listed as 74C/Broad St E./17th St. Whatever it is, stay in the right lane and it will dump you onto 17th St. Go straight on 17th St. and turn left onto Main St. I think that 17th St. may run into the Farmers Market at some point so you may have to navigate around it. I will be there all afternoon Friday trying to remember how to play.

Here are some updated directions to Gillies Creek coming up I-95 from the South:
I-95N to Exit 74A (195 Toll Road).
Exit soon onto Canal St. and pay the 20¢ toll.
Right on 10th.
Right on Cary.
Left on 12th, then right on Main St.
1 mile to left at Y on Williamsburg Ave., .etc...

On another trip I'll check out Exit 74C to see how that compares.

It looks like Gillies Creek is in pretty good shape. I hope to actually play more of it someday.
