Day Two Of the Collegiate Nationals

Friday, April 5, 2013 - 20:47

Day two of the 2013 National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships played host to some very exciting disc golf action. As the players arrived to the Hippodrome complex, they were treated to sunny skies and much better weather than the previous day. The scores were proof of that, as the competitors began to light it up.

Doubles action continued today with two rounds of the ever popular, team best/alternate shot format. For this style of play, each team of four has two odd members and two even members. The odd players tee off on the odd holes, the even players from the evens. From there, it is best shot with each set of the team alternating their throws. This format allows for each player to tee off the same amount of times and for teams to play as whole. Each hole has two teams playing together as an eight-some. The Championship division was challenged by the Headrick course the first round, which provides a great mix of tight, wooded fairways and wide open, big-arm type shots. Ferris State ripped off an incredible 47 on the 20 hole, par 62 layout to close the gap between them and Alabama-Huntsville, who shot a 51. In fact, the field began to bunch up at the top, perhaps a preface for some weekend dramatics.

In round two, Moody Woods was the next track to challenge the athletes. Moody is tight. On some holes it is impossible to walk from the tee to the green with your arms stretched out at your sides. Didn't seem to be a problem for California Monterey-Bay and North Carolina State, who shared honors of the hot round with a 47, 14 strokes under par. That tightened the field again, as there are now 12 teams within 9 strokes of the leaders, Alabama-Huntsville. The Huntsville team and Ferris State battled back and forth, and after the dust settled, the gap between them is only two strokes.

In the women's division, Mississippi State and Oregon State continued to battle for the title. After round one today, Oregon State leveled the playing field, besting thier competition by three. This must not have sat well with the girls from Mississippi State, coming out after lunch with a smooth 65 on the Headrick Hills course to re-take a two stroke lead. The mixed teams also included in the division are comprised of female players from several of the institutions in attendance.
