Wet Start to the National Collegiate Championships
Day one of the 2013 National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships kicked off with a boom...literally. The skies opened up overnight and continued to drench the Hippodrome complex throughout the day. Fortunately for the players, they only were required to play one round today, and the action was preceded by the typical fanfare that only a National Collegiate Championship could offer.
Due to the heavy rain, the opening ceremony was moved to an indoor equine arena, which provided ample room to accomodate the 61 teams in attendance. After recognizing the spectators and dignitaries in attendance, tournament director Alan Kane announced the defnding champions, Colorado State University, and womens defneding champs Mississippi State University. The ladies came busting through an NCDGC banner, leading the rest of the players into the arena. Chanting and school colors ablaze, over 240 competitors filled the room. The atmosphere was electric.
Outside, the rain persisted, but the players were too excited to sit on the bench, and round one got underway as scheduled. The men were slated to play the Hogback course, which is technical and tricky, with plenty of tight fairways to challenge the players. It didn't seem to slow down Alabama-Huntsville, who shot a red-hot 16 under par. Not too far behind are the local boys, Georgia Regents University and the Gamecocks of South Carolina at -11.
On the women's side, the Old Glory course was up first, and the defending champs were at it again. Mississippi State leads the field at 1 stroke over par, while Oregon State is at +4. Three other mixed teams participated in today's competition.
The clouds are parting and the weather is projected to improve throughout the weekend. To view a complete list of the scores, click here. Tomorrow sees the players in two more rounds of doubles play, so tune in on Disc Golf Planet TV for live disc golf action.
