Day 3 - Memorial Championship

Friday, March 1, 2013 - 23:52

Day 3 of The Memorial Championships presented by Discraft is complete and with that comes several amateur division champions and a 50% reduction of the players in each of the pro divisions. In the men’s advanced field, Nick Hanson from Sioux Falls, SD took the lead after day 1 with an impressive 1040 rated 7 down at Fountain Hills, and never looked back. He held his lead after day 2 at Vista Del Camino on the XL layout and returned to Fountain Hills for the final round only totake home the victory in a sudden death playoff.

Mark Hauser from Santa Barabara, CA took down the Advanced Masters division by carding the hot round on days 2 and 3, after finishing day 1 tied for 4th place. He won by 4 strokes overall with Gary Suarez and Scott Wittman right on his heels. Ron Robertson goes home as the winner of the Advanced Grandmasters division with a confident 9 stroke victory and Advanced Senior Grandmaster Stan Johnson barely edged out Al Faupel to win by a single stroke on the final round.

On the women’s side Jackolyn Halstead from Oregon City, OR bashed the competition by winning the Advanced division with a 26 stroke lead over second place finisher Christine De La Torre. Trina Lettig from Mesa, AZ had a similar story in the Advanced Masters division after taking down the title with a 20 stroke lead over second place.

The Open division women’s lead card today was full of surprises. Paige Pierce got off to a great start and was crushing drives as usual for birdie putt opportunities that the other women simply didn’t have. But a rough patch for Paige gave Val Jenkins and Sarah Hokom a chance to climb back towards the top. Both of them played consistent, great golf throughout the round and with 6 holes to go Valarie was within 7 strokes of Paige. Val finished with the hot round, a 1000 rated 3 under par, and she now sits 9 strokes back from Paige Pierce heading in to the final round. Catrina Ulibarri put herself back on the lead card with a 1 over par today and Liz Dorries sits right behind her in 5th place by only 2 strokes.

The Open division for the men was interesting to say the least. 3 different players (Adam Hunt, Dave Feldberg, and Garrett Gurthie) all tied for the hot round with a 1085 rated 13 under par. None of those players were on the lead card at the time, but they all jumped several spots in the overall ranks. Garrett Gurthie now sits on the lead card along with Gregg Barsby who made his way back to the lead card as well with a 49 at Vista today.

Will Schusterick and Philo Brathwaite both shot 12 under par, and Will is now tied with Ricky Wysocki for the lead after being down 3 strokes to him and Nikko Locastro to start the day. Will had a very nice eagle on hole 11 from roughly 275’ out that tied him for the lead and he battled back and forth for the lead with Ricky, Nikko, and Paul Ulibarri for the rest of the round. Nikko had a very unlucky and unfortunate hole 16, as he had 2 putts in a row hit the cage, drop down, and roll all the way down the hill to out of bounds. He finished the hole with a 7. Ulibarri took a 5 on the same hole after his first putt did the same thing.

The women’s lead card tees off at 9:45AM (11:45AM EST) tomorrow and the men’s lead card follows shortly after at 12:15PM (2:15PM EST). The gallery will be large and the excitement will be as high as ever.  Catch live streaming video of the final round action courtesy of DiscGolfPlanet.tv right here on PDGA.com. We'll be providing live hole-by-hole scoring once again for the lead cards with commentary via Twitter and photos on PDGA Live Flickr and PDGA Tour Flickr.
