Marana Rock Disc Golf Course
So far my favorite (and the most difficult) course I've played in Arizona. As stated, there are some great elevation changes making for some tough throws (depending on the placement of the basket). Water is an absolute must and hiking shoes are a good idea, especially in the late summer after a few good rains, the mud can be overwhelming. This is a fun course, but a tough one. Long drives and hot weather make it a doosy but a must. When it is grassy and the grass hasn't dried up and died, it's easy to lose a disk. I've lost 3 out there so far (even one of my favorites :(! ) But all in all, it's a must-see if visiting Tucson.
The Rock has elevation changes on almost every hole - and was designed to make the most of the existing basin landscape. There are many trees and large bushes that come into play on every hole. The basket on #6 is on a hill next to a large boulder, called Marana Rock, the course's signature hole. Hole #11, nicknamed The Titanic (817'), is fairly open, but quite a pull!
The basin is only used for Disc Golf, except for a rare jogger or mountain biker, so you don't have to worry about errant throws. The 6'x12' concrete tee pads are really nice and always point towards each basket, which are easy to see. The Rock is easily one of the best courses I've played!
My "home" course. I've only played six courses, but Marana Rock is hard to beat. The other five courses could probably fit inside this one! Crazy changes in elevation, and a well-designed and laid-out course--a lot of thought seemed to have gone into making it. Proper signage and good sized concrete teeboxes.
As already said, bring LOTS of water, and be ready for a bit of a hike--wear good shoes (I wear semi-hiking boots). Lots of up and down.
took a road trip in march was able to fit this course in. very nice i thought it was awesome. be sure to fit it into your schedule when passing by. bring your big boy arm for sure!
The Marana Rock Disc Golf Course is challenging and a lot of fun to play. It has a little bit of everything. The course has length with a Par three 556ft hole and a par four 817ft hole. There are a lot of mature trees that add just the right amount of difficulty. The layout was well thought out and this is by far one of the best Arizona courses. Make sure to bring a lot of water to this desert course and wear shoes with a lot of traction. Also be mindful of the desert wildlife (i.e. Rattlesnakes)
