Black Butte Lake Disc Golf Course
Must play course if you are on I-5. I played in October, leaves were mostly off the oaks, so I could see the baskets. The pin placements were strategic and challenging in that they were always guarded by a tree or two, or had treacherous hill-slope attributes. I can't imagine how tricky this would be when foliage is in full-flag in late spring or summer! Very tight windows, oak canopy in classic rolling grassland oak hills country. On federally owned (yours and mine) lands-- awesome!!!
This place is awesome. First of all, what a beautiful place for a disc golf course. We played in April of 2012 and the grass was green, it wasn't too hot, and it was simply a spectacular walk in the woods.
As for the holes themselves, when you look at the hole distances you think the course will be a push over and boring. This is not the case! It appears that they were not allowed to cut down a single tree, so the course is 100% natural and there are no wide open bomber throws anywhere. This means that the little 250ft and 300ft holes are HARD because if you miss the gap, you have a nasty 100 foot up shot. Additionally, they set up all the little short holes next to big hills, so getting a bad roll is inevitable if you don't lay up properly, or stick it in the chains. There are something like 6 350+ foot holes, and they are all hard. So don't let the short distances fool you, this course is a great test. They are planning on adding some new basket locations for tournaments and this will only make a great course better. There is also the wind. It appears to be a pretty constant presence and with the big hills, opens the potential for serious disaster.
Lastly, having a campground right next to the course is sweet, and the camping was really nice. This place is fantastic for a two day, overnight disc golf extravaganza.
This is one of the most challenging and beautiful courses in far Northern California. Even the shorter holes have the potential to get a bad roll-off and make par tough. Wind is a factor at least 50% of the time as it seems to come up from the lake and find its way through the rolling hills. Great course design and great use of elevation!
Plays longer than stated with many obstacles. Best played in early spring due to the heat and foxtails that are more than happy to travel with you. Water comes into play on some errant drives. Beautiful views of the lake at many holes. if you're in Nor Cal and looking for a challenging course it's worth the short detour from I-5.
