The San Francisco Disc Golf Club is seeking pledges of cash, discs and other resources in support of their very promising efforts to establish San Francisco's first disc golf course -- a 27-hole beauty in John McLaren Park. Most holes will have two sets of tees and three pin positions. The course will have a mix of tight woods, open spaces, and lots of elevation changes. A number of holes will offer sweeping views of downtown San Francisco, the East Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Ross Hammond, the head of the McLaren Park proposal committee, has managed to obtain letters of support from most of the major actors in the neighborhood surrounding the park including the Friends of McLaren Park, the Visitacion Valley Community Center, the Head of Athletic Curriculum for the San Francisco Unified School District and the P.E. teachers of all the middle and high schools surrounding the park. The staff of the Recreation and Parks Department has also been very helpful throughout the process. The proposal should go to Park Commissioners for approval sometime in the beginning of the year, with a proposed installation date of May 1998.

As part of the evolving proposal, city officials have asked that the disc golf community demonstrate its commitment and generosity to this course plan, by pledging to offset some of the city's expenses and to ensure the development of community involvement (i.e. getting the neighborhood kids to play disc golf). So far we have managed to raise $4,700 in pledges of cash and equipment, which puts us almost half way towards our goal of raising $10,000. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO RAISE THE REST!!! As an added incentive, the Friends of Recreation and Parks, a non-profit arm of the Department, will match your donation dollar for dollar.

Your donation will be tax deductible, and no amount is too small. Pending approval, pledges would not be called in until early next year but we need them now to ensure that San Francisco gets its first disc golf course. Please fill in the sheet below stating how much you as an individual or club can pledge and send it to: Ross Hammond, 88 Norwich Street, San Francisco, CA 94110. If you have any questions you can call him at 415-695-7482 or send him e-mail at: <margross@igc.apc.org>. (Do not send money yet).

Thanks for your time and dedication to disc golf and, if everything goes as well as it has so far, see you in San Francisco next year!

Sincerely,

The San Francisco Disc Golf Club
