2012 Worlds Begins with Doubles and Field Events

Saturday, July 14, 2012 - 00:19

Many of the competitors have already arrived here in the Queen City of Charlotte, NC for the grandest disc golf tournament of them all. On Saturday, the competition gets started with Mixed Doubles (one male/one female) for the Professional and Amateur divisions and age-division doubles for the juniors. Following doubles will be the Field Events on Sunday. A variety of four different skills events will be held and each will crown champions.

In doubles, 14 teams of juniors will play two rounds on the Eager Beaver course at Elon Park. The 36 teams of amateurs will be testing their skills at the site of the tournament’s Final Nine, Hornet’s Nest Park. The 25 team professional field will be playing at Bradford. All of them will be playing a mixed format of play consisting of some alternate shot, some best shot, and a third format that requires taking an equal number of drives from each of the two partners.

Stay tuned to PDGA.com for coverage, featuring live scoring of the 2nd round pro lead card, and see who takes the first championship of the week.

On Sunday, the players will get more chances to win a world title at Field Events which will be held at the Athletic Fields at Renaissance Park. The four competitions include putting, long drive, mini golf, and skill shot. The skill shot competition challenges players’ accuracy and finesse with a variety of specific shots. The folks at the Mini Disc Golf Federation have made their way down and will set up an 18 hole course in and around the softball complex (previously slated to be near the Tennis Center). The long drive competition will be held at the soccer fields. The putting contest will be played on a nine “hole” course setup in a small grove area near the entrance. Each hole will have a 1, 2, and 3 point station. The course is setup to require an array of different putts similar to all the putts one may be left with during a round of golf.

Field events will begin at 9:00 am Sunday morning and players should visit the full-color PDGA tent for any and all information. Registration is closed and there will be no walk-ups, but other players are encouraged to come hang out and watch. There will be food, drinks, and plenty of plastic to be had along with several other games that everyone can participate in and music and plenty of fun.

Then, we will finish the night with the World Putting Finals to be played at Center Court of the tennis complex. Although all the division titles will have been settled earlier in the day, the overall World Putting Champion will be decided in an 8-person head-to-head putting match tournament. The top 8 scores of the day, regardless of what division the competitor is in, will get the chance to showcase their skills at the finals. Starting at 8:00pm, the single elimination bracket action will get started and can be watched live both in the arena style bleachers for locals or at DiscGolfPlanet.tv from your computer. The energy will be high and the drama will be electrifying, setting the tone for the rest of the week.
