Texas States Day One

Sunday, April 3, 2011 - 09:56

The 2011 PDGA National Tour Elite Series, presented by Vibram Disc Golf, made its second stop this weekend outside of Houston at the 16th Annual Texas State Championships.  One hundred and sixteen professional players began teeing off this morning under cloudy skies at 9:30 am at the Jack Brooks Park course.  Jack Brooks Park now has two permanent courses, the Hills and Meadows. The local club also added a temporary course, affectionately called the Valley just for this event. Geoff Bennett had the best day in the Open Field shooting the best round on the tough Hills course, and hung on during the second round on Meadows leaving him 17 under. Geoff’s 58 on the Hills course was the highest rated round of the day, unofficially rated at a 1068.  One throw behind him is Georgia native Phil Arthur and Texas’ own Bradley Williams.  Eric McCabe, Paul Ulibarri and the highest rated player in PDGA history, Dave Feldberg, are all two throws back.

In the Pro Women’s division, 2010 Women’s Player of the Year Valarie Jenkins shot out to a first round lead with a hot 998 rated 67 on the Hills course.  Valarie is holding a six shot lead over Desiree Reading. They will be joined on the top card tomorrow by Liz Lopez and Sara Hokom who are 14 and 17 throws off the lead, respectively.

Jay “Yeti” Reading is leading in the Masters division at 21 under par; it looks like his new signature putter is really working for him.  With Patrick Brown in a close battle one throw behind, these guys were trading the lead all day and it will be interesting to see what happens in the final round on Sunday.  Vinnie Miller and Michael Kernan round out the lead card and are five and six throws back from the lead.

The A Pool will play the beautiful and challenging “South” course on Sunday, which is a combination of the Hills and Valley courses.  Sunday’s start will be tee times beginning at 7:45 am with the lead card in Open teeing off at 1:15pm, while the concurrent amateur SuperTour event, with its one hundred and thirty five competitors, will move to the shorter but technical “North” course.

Fans of the sport will be able to watch all the drama unfold with Live scoring starting around 1:15 pm Central time.  Articles and photo galleries of each day’s action can also be found at PDGA.com.
