Memorial Moving Day

Saturday, March 5, 2011 - 01:22

We had an exciting day here at the Memorial Championship Presented by Discraft, round three of the event got underway this morning with the Grandmaster division.  The leaders in the Men’s Open Division began at 2:10 pm this afternoon, with two young surging players and two legends of the sport.  Our leader Ken Climo, Paul McBeth, Paul Ulibarri, and Josh Anthon took the course just as the wind was starting to increase on the beautiful Vista Del Camino Course.  The first five holes of this course are must birdie holes, which can be difficult after hearing your name called on the first tee.  These guys handled the pressure carding many birdies before reaching the “back side” of the course where shots can get very tricky.  On hole 10 663 feet, a very tight fairway with OB marked on either side of the hole, Paul McBeth unleashed one of the greatest shots I have ever seen on this course.  He started with a 360 degree run up and landed his air shot past the pavilion 20 feet short of pin high to the left and carded a nice birdie 3.  The rest of the group scattered tee shots OB and ended up taking 5’s on this hole, just to give you a comparison.  The whole afternoon seemed to be going McBeths’ way, only missing one putt on his way to a 50 and the lead of the tournament going into the final round.  Barry Schultz, Nikko Locastro, and Nate Doss all shot in the upper 40’s today and will round out the lead card for tomorrow with McBeth.

In the Pro Women’s Division there is also a battle going on for the lead, Valarie Jenkins, Paige Pierce, and Sarah Hokom are trading great rounds each day.   They are all one stroke off each other respectably and will come down to whom can pull out that perfect round on the final day of play.

The Men’s Pro Masters Division is also a very tight race, after round three atop the leader board is George Smith from Columbia, MO and local player Dan Oleksy.  The Masters division has been a battle throughout the week but these two have opened up a decent lead going into Saturdays play.

Jim Myers in the Grandmasters division went into today’s round with a 9 stroke lead, and came out tied with James Schultz from Turlock, California.  James shot a 1050 rated 52 on the treacherous Vista course today. Tournament Director Dan Ginnelly had the second best round in this division today with a 56, moving him into 5th place.

Please be sure to check out our "live" coverage of the final day. DiscGolfPlanet.tv will be doing a live internet broadcast starting at 2:15pm Eastern Time and live scoring of the Men's lead card will start at 4:10pm Eastern.
