Masters Cup - Day 1

Masters Cup - Day 1

Friday, May 21, 2010 - 20:59

One hundred and fifty nine professional players teed off today in round one of the 2010 Steady Ed Headrick Memorial Masters Cup at the world famous DeLaveaga disc golf course in Santa Cruz, CA. Cool windy conditions greeted the field on the 27 hole layout and the scores reflected the challenging conditions.

2009 Masters Cup champion Gregg Barsby took up right where he left off last year, that being in the lead. Barsby carded a -7 on the par 78 layout to grab a slim one throw lead over Matt Orum, who just snuck into the event this morning off the wait list. Nate Doss carded a -3 on his home course with five others nipping at his heels just one throw back. Only eleven of the eighty four open players shot under par on the day and a score of +3 was good for an unofficial 1000 rated round, demonstrating the tough conditions and challenging course.

In the Womens Open division, Liz Carr and Santa Cruz's own Carrie "Burl" Berlogar carded scores of +9 to tie for the lead by two throws over Liz Lopez. Melody King carded a +12 to round out the lead group for round two. World champions Valarie Jenkins and Des Reading sit atop the second card just a few throws back, and will be looking to make a push on moving day.

Current Masters world champion Phil Arthur of Georgia made the best of his first trip to the Masters Cup by carding a +2 to lead that division by one throw over Norcal's Patrick Brown. The two battled it out just a few weeks ago at the U.S. Masters Championship on the east coast with Patrick Brown getting the best of Arthur with a second place finish. Four others turned in respectable scores of +1 to stay within easy striking distance going into Saturday..

Scott Riley shot a -1 to lead the Grandmasters division by five throws over Bill Lane with four others just two throws behind Lane.

Dr. Rick Voakes carded a +7 to lead the Senior Grandmasters division by a single throw over Tom Clickner and Snapper Pierson.

Weather conditions are expected to remain the same for Saturdays second round so there will be very little relief from the wind that kept the scoring conditions none too favorable. Tee times will once again begin at 7:30am with the Men's Open lead group teeing off at 2:10pm.
